Mozilla Firefox now available in Microsoft Store for Windows 10 and Windows 11

  • Staff
As of today, Firefox desktop is the first major browser to become available in the Windows Store for Windows 10 and Windows 11 users. Previously, if you were on Windows and wanted to use Firefox, you had to download it from the internet and go through a clunky process from Microsoft. Now that Microsoft has changed its Store policies, choosing Firefox as your desktop browser is even more seamless – and it comes with all the latest Firefox features.

On Windows? Download Firefox directly from the Windows Store

Why choose Firefox?

The core of a web browser is what’s called a “browser engine”. The engine is responsible for loading web pages from sites and displaying them on your screen so that you can see and interact with them. Until recently, Microsoft’s store policies required that all web browsers use the engine that Microsoft had built into their platform which meant we were unable to ship the Firefox you know and love in the Windows Store. This was not only bad for you but bad for the web because it meant that the web on Windows 11 would only have the features Microsoft was willing to provide. People deserve choice and we’re glad there is an easier option to download Firefox on Windows.

Now that Microsoft has changed their policies, we are finally able to ship Firefox with our industry-leading Gecko engine in the Windows Store. This lets us make your experience of the web joyful, safe, private, and fast with unique features like:
When you choose to use Firefox, you help us advocate for a web that is safer, more private and fast. You signal that you want a choice and the freedom to experience the web on your own terms. We’re excited to make Firefox available in the Windows Store. Try it out![

Has someone already downloaded it? I ask because it would be interesting to know whether it's a common Win32- or specifically built UWP-version of Firefox.

How can you tell if its the UWP version?
I cannot say for sure, but UWP by Microsoft are placed in special location, not like usual %ProgramFiles%\Appname. Also I guess that they may have Metro-specific (non-classic) UI controls, you may see it in Explorer or Windows 11 context menu, which I luckily got rid of. However, this feature is not always clearly visible, like in Notepad which looks the same as classic one.

I think the indicator here is that if you right click on the icon in start menu, it has an app settings entry which goes to the settings app. So Firefox does appear different in that regard.

Has someone already downloaded it? I ask because it would be interesting to know whether it's a common Win32- or specifically built UWP-version of Firefox.
It appears to be a conventional Win32 .exe, installed in C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Mozilla.Firefox_94.0.1.0_x64__n80bbvh6b1yt2\VFS\ProgramFiles\Firefox Package Root.

1636547521972.png

The size of Firefox.exe is identical to that in a conventionally installed Firefox. In all respects except the install location it appears to be the same Firefox that has been installed. There is however no 'Firefox Updates' section in its Setting > General page, so presumably you're relying on the Store to update it.

1636547622575.png

Edit: another significant difference is that it is seems to only be available for use by the user account that installed it from the Store. Each account that wants Firefox would have to install it from the Store, unlike the conventional installer that installs for all users.

Thanks for this notice, it's important. For me, it confirms that installing Win32 applications via MS Store has significant disadvantages in compare to downloading the traditional installer from developer's website, which allows to install/reinstall/update/repair/uninstall in "classic" way. And the installer can be copied on external drive for backup purpose or to use on other PCs without Internet connection (I mean not a web browser but a service tool like Macrium Reflect). Doing the same is quite uneasy for UWP. Of course, in some cases the distribution of Win32 apps along with UWP via Store may be counted as advantage, but not always.

Maybe at some point in the future MS Store will be improved and will finally include the options we are using many years.

I'm not sure I can trust Microsoft with Firefox.
I don't see the advantage for Firefox in having it in the store.
I do see advantage for Microsoft to "get it's hands on" Firefox.

I can almost see the posts now... Why does Firefox keep defaulting to Edge?

I think I'll stick with the regular Firefox downloads. :)

I guess it could be an advantage for some users. With MS wanting users to switch to Edge I wonder why they decided to include Firefox in the MS Store?

Yes, what gets installed appears to be all the same executables and .dlls - how it is installed and updated is the same as any other Store app (with all the same restrictions/inconveniences).
