Solved MSI motherboard ignoring discreet graphics card for V-BIOS

MSI RTX3060 Ventus 2x 12GB graphics card
Intel Core-i7 13700K processor (with integrated graphics)

Recently doing an experiment where I wanted to enable CSM mode on this motherboard.
When trying to change the BIOS setting it would not stick, throwing up a message:
"Onboard graphics V-BIOS is not supported in CSM Mode. The "BIOS CSM/UEFI Mode" will be changed to UEFI.

Problem is that this system does have a discreet graphics card and the BIOS setting Graphics Configuration > Primary Display Adapter is set to PEG (not IGD).
The Ventus card is V-BIOS compliant.

Any ideas of what the problem is here?

I was able to switch mine to CSM mode with no problem.

I think what they mean is the VBIOS of your Graphics Card RTX 3060 needs updating.
Onboard meaning your discrete Graphics board, not the integrated Graphics which are on the CPU chip.

The Graphics Card manufacturer may or may not have that Firmware (VBIOS) update.
Apparently not for MSI, but you could use the MSI centre it may come via that.

Also why not use the Integrated Graphics temporarily, see if that works.

Yes, I believe I have on the (onboard) CPU graphics disabled. I recall that being automatic. But it's been a while since setting that up.
I will check.

Does that setting revert to that default when you update the BIOS?
I've got a list of settings to re-set every time I flash, and that's not on it.

I think "onboard graphics" refers to the GPU on the motherboard and the processor. That’s how I’ve always understood it when it comes to BIOS settings.

I would disable the 3rd option, post #8

2nd option for shared memory, set to say 2 GB, 8 GB or whatever.
Integrated Graphics uses shared RAM so you have to allocate a sensible amount.

Ultimately you can remove the Graphics Card from it's slot so you only have the iGPU useable.


"Onboard Graphics" is an old expression used decades ago when CPUs did not have iGPU on chip, it was a graphics chipset elsewhere on the MOBO, commonly a Cirrus Logic chipset, Voodoo graphics etc, circa 1990s.

No idea why MSI is still using such expressions in 2026.

Thanks Helmut. Yeah, that was all it was.
Option 2 disappears when you disable IGD. Seems that's only for IGD.
I guess, if you look at it sideways, the CPU is on the board, so the CPU graphics are still integrated and on board.
The 1990's are probably where I got the idea that the internal graphics are automatically disabled when you install a graphics card!
