Need to shrink Windows space usage without Clean Install

I'm running Windows 11 on an NVMe SSD. Problem is that the original 30GB install has grown to over 50GB -- on the 64GB partition. I have tried all my usual stuff to shrink this: Wise Care 365 Pro, Settings Temporary files, DISM ResetBase command -- with little change.

I'm running the 22621.1 build on an Insider SSD and despite much the same apps and settings, it is only using about 30GB of space.

Yes, I know I can "fix" this with a Clean Install -- but I really don't want to use the 22621.1 ISO on my production drive until MS releases it and such an install will take hours of prep to do the backups and a day or two of reinstalls and reconfigurations -- all of which I am trying to avoid.

So, if there is anything else I can try, then please let me know.

I would first install Treesize or Wiztree or a similar app, run with admin elevation and see if you can locate the space users on your partition, then decide if you need them or not and prune appropriately.
Have you tried deleting all restore points then re creating just one.
Are you using hibernation? Can you reduce page file without causing issues?
You could try making an image of the partition then restoring it, most imaging apps will exclude certain folders/ files from the image thereby 'compacting' the result, when you restore the image it could well be noticeably smaller, but you would need to do the process to be sure.
Of course you could make an image anyway so that if you try any other methods and things go awry at least you have a way to go back.

22621 build won't have had any cumulative updates yet so that's likely why it's smaller, Windows does grow over time. I doubt an in-place upgrade will work with only 14GB of free space, this will be a problem anyway when 22621 is officially released. Are your personal files/folders on a different drive/partition?

Have you tried Disk Cleanup? Right-click on the drive, select "Properties", then "Disk Clean-up". Be sure to click "Clean-up system files". Major updates create a backup copy of Windows and the Windows Update files can be quite large too, Disk Clean-up on system files will remove them, if you check the boxes in the list of files to delete.
Have you compressed the drive? Right-click on the drive, select "Properties", click the checkbox "Compress the drive to save disk space".

How much of that is your Windows system files? My 22000.708 install is as tidy as I can get it and weighs in at just 13.5GB.

There are rare reports though of DISM (and Disk Clean up) failing to clean up windows updates even though it appears to go through all the motions. Here's one....


See my post #7 in that thread for how to check if that's the case for you. It also has a link to a Windows 10 thread with the same issue, and a report than an in-place repair upgrade was the fix.

Also see my post #11 where I reported having this fault on another of my machines, and fixed it by restoring an earlier system image.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

I have backups that are on a different drive, but the personal stuff is in the default folders.

I use DISM instead of Disk Cleanup -- as it does more.
I'm not going to compress the drive as I have read that causes problems.

Mine lists System files as 18.3 GB, Reserved storage as 6.56GB, and System restore as 1.56GB

So, if I turn off System Restore (which I don't need since I use Macrium Reflect), I'm guessing I can recover that space.

In terms of Reserved storage, I went into Apps --> Optional features and all of the Installed features take less than 300MB -- so I don't see there any way to reduce this Reserve.

And yes, I can certainly consider an in-place Repair Install since I do have a build 708 ISO -- but I will have to resize the Windows partition, first, to get more free space.

That is not unreasonable, my other system lists 17.7GB of system files. Yes, turning off system restore will delete that 1.56GB.
And yes, I can certainly consider an in-place Repair Install....
Only consider it if, after running DISM to clean up the component store, its /AnalyzeComponentStore option still reports that there are reclaimable packages. Only if it fails to clean up would you need the in-place repair.

In terms of Reserved storage ... I don't see there any way to reduce this Reserve.

The word 'reserved' is a bit misleading, it's not space that's set aside and never used. Windows is actively using this space, but its reserved only for purposes that can easily be dumped if space is needed to allow an update to complete.

One more point, are you running DISM through an elevated prompt? I always do and it has never failed to clean up cumulative update packages from LCU or to empty WinSXS 'hold on to it for now' folders.

Unfortunately, DISM did fail to recover any space -- so I did a Repair-Install

One more point, are you running DISM through an elevated prompt? I always do and it has never failed to clean up cumulative update packages from LCU or to empty WinSXS 'hold on to it for now' folders.
Yes, I am running it elevated -- as I have a Batch file that does that for me.

Update to all -- first off, thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

Second, the Repair-Install, and clean-ups afterward, did the trick. I have gone from 50GB of used space to 33GB of used space.

The component store can get damaged, particularly after a crash, in such a way that DISM can no longer clean it. It has done so for me....

DISM reported three packages to clean up, but was unable to clean them (some 4GB).

In cases such as these you would require an in-place repair upgrade to fix.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

How big is your NVMe drive? You mention a 64G partition. Do you have any other non Windows partition?
On "My Computer" it mention drives. Do you have more drives on your desktop?
I think it can be simple to add more storage space than free on a limit one.
Please post a Disk Manager image of your drives. Whole window please and expand the columns so we can read them.

Can't do any harm to try, but if - as you say - it'll take hours/days to re-install everything (after 30 mins Windows clean install and update), then I suspect what's on there taking up +50GB , is normal/natural.

Is it a brand named computer, and if so. have you cleaned out all the proprietary bloatware. Branded devices come with s-o-o-o-o much totally unnecessary proprietary disk/system checking/monitoring cr4pware that is either meaningless or useless, or simply duplicates functions provided by Windows. And then there's all the freeware/demoware software ....

Mind you, a clean install from latest Windows version from the Microsoft website - using the MS Media Creation Tool to create a boot USB - will solve that, anyway.

I have backups that are on a different drive, but the personal stuff is in the default folders.
Can you move your Documents/Pics folders to another drive? it'll free up space and be safer when you re-install Windows
