Solved New Asus Laptop, Not yet Turned on. Account/Activate concern

Hello All,

I am a win7 user. I just bought a new laptop with win11 64-bit home. I have not
even turned it on yet because I am trying to figure what my MS user account
options are. I want to be able to:

1- Start the computer and not have to enter PW or other MS account info.
2- Have the ability to use the computer when NOT CONNECTED to the internet.

I've read in places about initially activating win11 using your MS account then
make a local account and use that. But would this cause issues with MS Store
or other issues? I do have a MS account because I also have an Xbox Series-S.
I'm just trying to reduce MS snooping and of course use machine offline.

If any of you die hard win11 users can offer me some direction on accomplishing
this I would be most grateful.

Secondly, if I may, way back in win7 days it was suggested to install programs
outside of the c:/ProgramFiles directory...something to do with how win7 protects
software installed in there. So what I've done since win7 inception
is made 2 sub-directories of the root of the system partition c:/Win7 like
this:
c:/Win7
|Inet
|Winprogs

I install all internet type programs into the c:/Inet directory and all other
programs into the c:/Winprogs directoy. Of course some programs I just let
them install to their default folders. So would this be acceptable for win11
64-bit. I do like installing software with this method. What ya think?

Hi & welcome to the forum,

I will only address the storage location of your programs:

Choosing a dedicated area to store your programs is half way there; you need to set those up in a separate partition (or even better on a dedicated drive) to really make it worth it. Not selecting the same drive as the OS is the way to go IMO.

  • Open Windows Settings> Network & internet on the left, and click on Advanced network settings on the right
  • Click on Enable or Disable for the network adapters you want to stop/start

To create a shortcut to this so you don't have to click click click

  • Right-click on your desktop and select New > Shortcut.
  • In the location field, type or paste the following:
(Click on to copy to clipboard) ms-settings:network-advancedsettings
  • Click Next, then name your shortcut something like Advanced Network Settings or Disable Internet
  • Click Finish.
Double-clicking this should take you directly to the Advanced Network Settings.

That I am not 100% sure about. Signing in to Windows and signing in to Microsoft store may very well be two different things. I'll let someone else answer that. (Answered in Post No. 5)

I wouldn't worry to much because I'll bet your laptop has a factory recovery option to take it all back to out of the box state... its worth you looking into that.

Fwiw every time I have clean installed W11 (and I mean a real clean install) creating a local account has never been an issue because there has always been an option to get past that account stage.

Look for 'I have no internet' or enter something incomprehensible and look for a tiny option somewhere to skip past that point. Unless things have radically changed, and they might of course, then it was as I say never an issue.

Having been a fan of local accounts since forever, the last year or two has seen me abandon that and I do use my MS account now when setting up a new install. It brings so many benefits and you still have control over it all anyway.

I can answer that one... no issues with the store that I found other than it asking you to sign in using your MS account (sign in to the store) as a one off each time.

Again... think seriously about using your MS account. I resisted and resisted for years and wish I hadn't tbh. Setting up a new PC is a doddle when all your settings and internet favourites and so on are re-applied automatically... if you want... it does ask. You do have control.

Yes Mooly it has a recovery partition. I watched some YT videos about bypassing but depending on the version of win11 sometimes those things to look for that you mentioned are no longer there.

I suggest you create a large partition at the end of the drive for data only (leaving 80G for Windows and programs).
This way, if necessary, you can do a clean install on the Windows and programs an Recovery partition without loosing your data (although backup on an external drive is always mandatory).

Unfortunately (I have just discovered) Airplane mode wont stop Ethernet

I have updated my first post to add better instructions to disable the internet

I have also added instructions to create a desktop shortcut to take you straight to the page where you can enable/disable the internet for both Wireless and Ethernet. Easy as.

I suggest you create a large partition at the end of the drive for data only (leaving 80G for Windows and programs).
This way, if necessary, you can do a clean install on the Windows and programs an Recovery partition without loosing your data (although backup on an external drive is always mandatory).
