I'm monitoring with HWInfo....

Comes down to what 'too high' means. Just noting at this stage those Sentinel readings just now were higher than those recorded over past few days by Sentinel. HWInfo initillally reported lower but now records a spike of 100 degrees C with current temp of 46. Difficult to know what these tools are doing and how accurately. And beyond what temperture I should be concerned. Looking at this guidance: Best CPU Temperature 2026: Guide to Safe Operating Ranges

May I send in logs again after I've used the machine for a week or so just to try and spot any critical events?

I guess I don't understand why you're not insisting on Dell replacing the laptop in it's entirety or simply refunding your money so you can buy a decent product!

Hi Thanks for your reply.

Don't know if you've ever tried to send back for RMA to Dell but I'm not finding it that easy - they want me to jump through hoops first. Which is why I cam here. Zbook's help has been invaluable in identiftying critical issues from the event logs that rarely mean much to me. Zbooks definitive questions to Dell have worked it seems.

But has it been established that it is not a 'decent' product. It is certainly not a high end laptop, and whilst I don't think I should need to have a high end device to get something that works properly, mobo faults have been acknowledged (thanks to ZBook 🙏). Now testing again to check for any more faults on new mobo/cpu for a week or so of use. If there are any then I will push back harder.

I hope that what I am now seeing is to be expected with a modern Intel processor, in very slim cases that are not the best for cooling. Time will tell.

Where will I get anything much different at a reasonable price from a major manufacturer? Maybe I bought the wrong machine...

For record this is what has been recorded so far by HWInfo with what look like spikes to 100 degrees which I understand is expected with modern Intel processors...? Plus a little throttling... :crys:

Running constantly for the last 10 minutes with all three of those monitoring apps running plus HWInfo, browser, explorer 2x mail apps, all open but was proped up from desk.

CPU 10-15%, memory 60% very little disk activity, 1-5%

Your CPU usage seems fine with what you have open.

I have a 2019 Dell laptop. On its driver page, there's a thermal management application called Dell Power Manager with the following settings:
Optimized
Cool
Quiet
Ultra Performance

Check if you have a thermal management application on your Dell's driver page and experiment with the thermal profile settings.

If it's new, I will send it back where it came from and find something else. You should not stress yourself out about the issue if it is new. Return it. You should be enjoying your new device and not scratching your head.

Thanks but Dell Power Manager is not offered with this machine...Actual CPU usage has never been an issue wven when using it heavily for office type work.

This is all that has been running for last 45 minutes and the fan has not stopped running at low level.....not even doing anything on it...so maybe there is still a problem. Will wait for a couple of weeks for some event logs before I go back to Dell.

30% CPU usgae was a spike, down to 5-10% most fo the time with those apps running

If it's new, I will send it back where it came from and find something else. You should not stress yourself out about the issue if it is new. Return it. You should be enjoying your new device and not scratching your head.
It was bought in August last year. Can't remember when I first contacted Dell within weeks of receiving the machine abut the fan noise. But they keep insisting on trying to fix first...? It maybe that if I have to go back to them again because there are still issues that I can prove after a couple of weeks then I can push it to RMA. I have tried once.

This isn't normal, and Dell says so too. They might have made a mistake with this particular model of computer. On mine, the fans stop or go to the minimum speed.

I saw this application on the Dell website for the computer:
Dell Optimizer
This package contains the Dell Optimizer application. Dell Optimizer improves system performance and productivity by adjusting settings for power, battery, display, touchpad for collaboration, and presence detection. It also allows you to access the applications you purchased with your new PC.

Thanks. I will try the Dell optimiser agaion but I think when I tried to install it, it failed. Will double check. As I type now the fan is just about falling back to low level, but still audible.

Now using HWMonitor as suggested by zbook
HWiNFO64 is superior to HWMonitor for system monitoring especially on modern hardware.

Do not run both at the same time as they can conflict when polling sensors which can lead to incorrect readings or system instability.

Only want to run one program at a time when polling sensors.

Okay, for me the fans are audible at minimum speed. But maybe there's an inaudible level. I'd have to monitor it with software to find out. I've never done that.

However, my laptop has an Nvidia 1060 graphics card, and when I played The Witcher 3 on it, the fans were always running at full speed and it was very loud.

Have installed Dell Optimiser. The thing that wouldn't install was something else that was for other models only....But what does Dell Optmiser do with 'thermal' management, that windows settings and the intel firmware for the doesn't do anyway....? Would be interested to know. Anyway set it to 'quiet' under thermal management. Will see what that does if anything but I'm not holding my breath on that one. So far fan still chugging away.

If you live in the UK you should invoke your consumer rights. You could always go to the Small Claims Court or you could go to the Citizens Advice Bureau.
What matters is when you first complained, it must be within six months of purchase. Did you buy diect from Dell?

Even though Windows and Intel don't do it, OEMs can configure things for their laptops. Intel leaves some settings to OEMs for their laptop processors. So Dell Optimizer, in general, shouldn't be useless.

If there were something other than "quiet," like "optimal" as the default value, I would leave that value for a while. This value and its behavior may have been taken into account during the Dell Optimizer installation.

I can't imagine that being anything normal!

I've owned a number of laptops over the years, and both of my daughters, my grandson, and my wife all have laptops of various vintages and brands. I've never had anything like this happen to any of them, especially a brand new one. Usually, my overheating issues come after they get contaminated with dust and blowing it out usually solves that problem. I had one Compaq years ago that I had to take apart and properly apply some better heatsink compound to solve it's high temperature running.

However, you have convinced me of one thing. I won't be buying Dell anytime soon if they're that much of a PITA to resolve an obvious issue!
