Solved New laptop, constantly running fan, high core temp?

Please ask Dell how they would troubleshoot the

live kernel events and these event viewer reports:

Please decide whether you want to

a) stop troubleshooting and RMA
b) troubleshoot and RMA

Whatever the choice please ask Dell for their suggestions for future thread viewers.

There are more rigorous software that stress hardware than the Dell diagnostics for drives, GPU, CPU, etc.

Thanks. For when I speak to Dell, could you just give me a summary of what the V2 logs tell you. Just helps to know what I'm taking about if they quibble. Will also just wait for a couple of days to see if the new heatsink fan and reseating with fresh thermal paste does anything. They are doing that this afternoon. That will narrow down a bit more...possiby.... unless the logs tell another story about what's going on?

When available, update the progress with post #22.

Post #18 had some of the events from the event viewer with dates and times.

Post #21 had them organized with only the error messages.

The live kernel events with bugchecks 141, 1A8, 1B8 were all related to GPU .

The controller errors, retried, and paging errors related to drives.

The BIOS had not supported entries.

Just had a chance to look at this. Befire I get back to Dell, and looking at the descriptions of some of the events and erros just need to see if you think any of the following could relevant to some of the issues all of which Dell are aware of:

  • I have upgraded the Samsung 500GB SSD with a Kingdton 2TB SSD (a lot seem to relate to hard disks) - I have partioned this into 3 partiotions to seperate data from operating system. I do not know what the Harddisk1\DRx numbers refer to and if this could be relevent.
  • I am using a usb hub that does not have an external power supply
  • I have reinstalled the operating system and activated with with my own standalone retail licence key (this coudl easily be changed back to the OEM key).
But even with these points I do not see why i should not be able to do these things without causing any of the issues you have identified in the logs.
Thank you again for your help.

If I'd purchased a new laptop I'd make sure that it has no hangs, freezes, black screens, BSODs, etc.

I'd not want any of these: The live kernel events with bugchecks 141, 1A8, 1B8 were all related to GPU.

If there are no hangs, freezes, black screens, BSODs, etc., then you've got time to test drive before the warranty expires.

The controller errors could be related to drives that were permanent or temporarily attached..

Check the warranty coverage to see if you're ok to run software that stress test the hardware components.

Run FurMark - GPU Stress Test Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

Aim for 1 hour testing.

Please make note of the importance of temperature monitoring and aborting the test in the GPU link.

Abort testing as needed for temperature changes, freezing, display artifacts, etc.

This is Dell's reply:

Thank you for sharing the logs with us.

Upon reviewing the files, we noticed that the logs provided appear to be operating‑system–related and do not contain the necessary diagnostic information required to isolate the issue you are experiencing. To move forward effectively, we will need the relevant application‑specific or hardware‑level logs

We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to resolving this issue as quickly as possible.
Thank you for choosing Dell.

Where do you think I should go from here? Other than asking them how I should prepare the 'relevant application‑specific or hardware‑level logs'?

And I thought you said that some related to hardware?

Ask them what specifically they want.

If there are any problems:

1) Make free or pay backup images > save the images to another disk drive or the cloud
2) Clean install Windows 11
3) Test with gaming software and software designed to stress test hardware components
4) Record symptoms: hangs, freezes, etc.; Record signs: black screens, blue screens, unexpected shutdowns and restarts
5) View log files
6) Restore the backup image after testing the new operating system has completed

So I ran the v2 logging they supplied myself, the one they could not run on my machine 5 seperate times when they were remoting in. Apparently the file dump was not where it should be. But it was dumped to the corect location when I ran it tonight and I sent them the logs. These are the logs they are referring to in their last reply #32.

If I reinstall Win11 I can just take out the Kingston SSD and reinsert the samsung SSD it came with.

I can only do the steps above if you can stick with me for the viewing of log files becuase I don't know what I'm looking for. I don't know immeadiately where to find the warranty details that will tell me if I void the warranty by running the stress tests you recommend. And remember Dell technicians may be reading this.

Whatever route I take I will have to wait until next week because I won't be able to get into this for a couple of weeks as I'm away then will need to use the laptop for another week to test out the changing of the fan and heatsink.

But it has been sitting hardly used today (using desktop instead) and just now I opening it up and was quiet until I opened a few applications and the fan is still running constantly again, admitedly at low level so far. But I am not doing anything with any of the open applications. Max xore temp already 67 degrees. CPU packagae 70 degrees.

Just thought I would check logs on my desktop: For example found similar there with regard to TPM updates:
"Updated Secure Boot certificates are available on this device but have not yet been applied to the firmware. Review the published guidance to complete the update and maintain full protection".
and
"USB device draining system power when system is idle...."

and there are critical kernel events

I have to say that looking at the logs on my desktop Windows Event Viewer shows a fair few errors under system. And I remember way back looking at these on any computer I have had, there are always some that generally do not seem to stop the PC working or mean it is going to die. The black screens though is something I have generally not experienced on desktop. Are these things just part and parcel of the Windows Operating system?

Don't know if I'm doing something wrong and just to be clear because I don't want to waste your time with misunderstandings. Dell supplied me with a command prompt for V2 log files that ran for them when they were remoting into my machine but did not dump the logfile. They and I tried it in total 5 times. I tried running it myself this morning and as far as I know it did dump the logfile which is this one. [REMOVED FILE DUMP - Can send to zbook]

After going through this thread again, I believe your number one issue to solve, prior to all this other troubleshooting, is your CPU temps. Your processor should not be thermal throttling. That alone should be enough for your vendor to take that system back for a replacement. That is not normal regardless of whatever background processes might be running.

OK sorry for the long delay. Problem when you need to use the machine.

At Dell's request I have reinserted the supplied samsung SSD and have reinstalled Windows. Nothing else apart from HWInfo. Fan hasn't stopped running througout just installing, setting up windows and a bit of configuration of windows and browser.

I have said that I did not want to troubleshoot any more and just wanted to RMA the machine for a refund. THey have said they cannot do that at this stage.

I now need to prove that there is something wrong so will install. If I run stress tests can Dell say that I have voided the warranty?
