New Lenovo falls asleep

About a month ago I bought a Lenovo laptop for my spouse. I have power settings while plugged in as sleep - never. But after some time (not sure how much but more than just a couple minutes), it hibernates or goes to sleep. It is essentially dead except for the led by the power switch slowly blinking. tapping esc or other keys, clicking the mouse and even tapping the power doesn't wake it up. Have to press and hold the power button for the 4 or so seconds to force it off and then boot it normally.

Just so you know, new mobile devices these days do not "sleep" as what users have been accustomed to. They go into a state called modern standby(S0 state), waking instantly, While traditional S3 sleep powers down most components, modern standby does not. Certain background tasks still run and internet connectivity is retained. Modern standby uses more power so be aware, battery level depletes faster when running on battery in this state. It is advised not to carry such devices in a closed case when in the S0 state as they generate more heat. If it's going to be enclosed in a bag, shut it down.

Windows settings:
Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate time-outs > expand that section with the down chevron v

You have to do more than the one setting, there are at least 3

Control Panel:
Power Options > You may find Lenovo power plans in there > Change plan settings.
Various LH menu items.

For the BIOS settings probably F2, that's what mine is, nothing relevant however.

Many brand name devices come with pre-installed proprietary bloat/software, which in more cases than not, simply duplicate functions available in/provided by Windows. Quite often, even though the Windows settings are disabled, these proprietary services still run

Check Services (Start menu > Windows Tools > Services). Look for anything "Lenovo". To disable, right click > Stop, right click again > Properties > set Startup type to Disabled

I'll try those one at a time in order. Have to get time when she's not using it. Definitely want to disable hibernate any way

glasskuter

Shouldn't be a problem. This is primarily sitting around plugged in. It doesn't travel much. And I set it so she could close the lid to shutdown and open to boot. I think I've seen bios' where that could be disabled. The Lenovo was pretty simple so probably not but I'll check.

Helmut

I think I did look in bios and didn't find anything but will double check. BTW becaue machines are different, I just put a shortcut to my various machines - C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe -r -t 0 -fw to get into bios.

idgat

I think I check those but will again.

Hey Spokey, did you manage to find a solution? I was absolutely stunned when I read your description because it’s almost exactly my situation (although I don’t remember my power switch slowly blinking). I gave my wife a Pro 5i Gen 10, and at random times while it’s idle, it simply freezes - nothing happens at all until you perform a manual restart using the power button. I tried a clean reinstall and updated all the available drivers, but it still keeps happening.

I did find the problem in my case. The screen was going off (time setting for that). Turns out coming back on, the lock screen was on . The screen was blank so you wouldn't know it is waiting for a password. When I turned that off (there is a Brink tutorial somewhere here), the problem went away. The screen still goes off, the power led slowly blinks, but I press say esc, the laptop comes back to life.

Got rid of hibernate later which I planned on away but it was irrelevant.
