The one on the 9th was dubbed a CU, but this one is an SU. It must be a small one, 'cuz it downloaded and installed in just a few secs.

My daily driver is not showing any v7 updates yet. I have seen it on a few other Win11 systems however.

Where does the version for Defender show. I looked at my settings and everything looks fine . Does not indicate I should d.l. anything.

The Defender definition files are an automatic daily installation. You don't have to see them or do anything about them. If you open WU and look at Update History, you'll see Definition Updates (50) in there. That just means WU keeps an active list of the last 50 Def updates, but only the last 50. Since they're daily, and sometimes more than daily, the list would grow awfully long without a cut-off.

Mine was only mentioned by WU because I did a Search for Updates, as I do every morning, and I did it before Windows had the chance to do the automatic update for the day. Otherwise, I'd never have seen it., except by checking in the Definition Updates (50) list.

According to the update history my last .Net update was a CU for .Net 3.5 and 4.8.1 installed on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. I have no entries for .Net 7.0.15.

It may be that only "seekers" get this one before Patch Tuesday. I dunno. As I said in #9, I check for updates every morning, just mostly out of habit.

You would only get the .NET 7 update if you had .NET 7 installed. 3.5 and 4.8 come with Windows; 5-8 do not (yet).

I think I recall that something I was trying to do required 7, so I got it. Been a while. Thanks for pointing that out.

I'm not convinced that is the case. I just clean installed Win11 on a system a few days ago. Sometime after doing updates it installed .NET v7 on it's own. I did install .NET v6 manually however.

@BamaInArk Nope, only .NET Frameworks are included in Windows. In Windows 11, it's specifically versions 3.5 and 4.8. .NET Framework versions have a much longer lifecycle than .NET versions. I don't actually know this for sure, but I assume it's the difference in lifecycle (and support) that accounts for .NET Framework being in Windows, while .NET isn't.

.NET Framework 4.8 hasn't had an EOL announced, and it's over four years old. 3.5 has an over 20-year life, from November, 2007 to January, 2029.

Contrast that with .NET, where version 5 and 7 have lifecycles of about 18 months. .NET 6 was a long-term support (LTS) version, and it had a three-year life.

(I did verify on Windows 11 23H2 Home and Pro before posting this, both before updating and after.)

My last install, in December, 1 app and 1 game insisted on installing .NET 3.5. According to these two entities, 3.5 wasn’t available on the system. I don’t know if I had to enable it in windows or if it just wasn’t there. So I let them install.

Looked in Installed Apps, and found not only .Net 7, but also Microsoft Windows Desktop Runtime. I have a very important (to me) Store app running all the time, and I think it required some of this. Seems the MWDR and .Net go hand-in-hand.
