New Photos app vs Photos Legacy and Snipping Tool

The 'new' Photos app is causing problems when I open pictures, the colours are messed up - it seems to be applying some sort of HDR or extra brightness to the pictures.
If I open the same pics in Photos Legacy (downloaded from MS Store) or Snipping Tool, the pics are fine.

See attached files for comparison. One is a screenshot from the new Photos app, one is from Photos Legacy.
The thumbnails are displayed correctly.

If I open a pic in Snipping Tool, then save it again the new Photos app displays it correctly.

It's only started recently with an update to the new Photos app. It doesn't matter where the picture came from, even some I've downloaded from the Internet and some older ones I took 5-6 years ago.

In the app, can you not click the settings (gear) icon and move the "Automatically enhance my photos" switch to the left to "Off", After the automatic enhancement function is turned off, the viewed picture should no longer be automatically modified

Apparently that option was removed?

I read that if you disable HDR system wide, it may help (why would one do that?)
I also read that adding a profile to your display properties (sRGB) that it could help, but again, why?
The most common thing I found surfing this problem, was to “Use a different photo app”
This app doesn’t appear to be that popular.

You might try to Repair or Reset the Photo App if you think the problem started after a Windows Update.

To do this, go to Settings -> Apps -> Installed Apps -> Photos, click on the 3 dots and select 'Advanced Options' -> Repair.

If the app still isn't working right, Reset it. The app data will be deleted.

Photos Legacy is actually better than the 'new' app anyway so I'll stick with that.

Recent updates to the new app have made it worse, not better. Good old Microsoft!

I do use a HDR profile, created with the Windows calibration app.

Nope not working at all again now, it's gone back to how it was before the app update

Reset and re-installed the new Photos app, pictures still not right. Fine with any other picture app.
Again if I edit/crop the pictures using Snipping Tool first, they display correctly in Photos app

Makes no difference. When I open a picture it looks normal briefly then the colours go wrong.
Another PC here doing exactly the same thing. Just tested with a picture from 2018, same problem so not related to the Samsung S23

I see only one option left ; try the older version , its Photos , can be downloaded from store............

Yes Photos Legacy, the new Photos app has a link to it in Settings.
It works fine...
