Macrium say - Reflect X uses a new image file format - mrimgx. These files are not compatible with Reflect 8. However, Macrium Reflect X will continue to use the old mrimg file format when appending (incrementals and differentials) to existing Macrium Reflect 8 backup sets.

I assume this implies Reflect X is wholly backwards compatible with previous backups made with Reflect 8?

As far as I'm aware existing backups made with ver 8 are usable with 10.

Allegedly yes but history is littered with tools that were not as 100% backwards compatible as they were claimed to be.

One slightly irritating feature of Reflect is you could never have two versions accessible from Windows at the same time.

However you can copy files from a usb rescue drive to its own small partition and create a separate boot entry.

So yeah although it should be backwards compatible, make sure you can still use V8 if something conks out.

There was a lot of testing during the BETA to insure this was the case... mixed image chains (mrimg & mrimgx segments), all worked well (after some minor discoveries :-) ).

Good shout about removing licence from version 8 before testing version 10.

Did this for 15 minutes !

Found menues virtually identical.

Version 8 max transfer speed 9.0Gb/s , time taken on M2 external drive: 2 min 50 secs ( 1.3 t/bytes )

Version 10 max transfer speed 12.9Gb/s time taken " " " " : 2 mins 26 secs ( " " " " )

Still think the new 3 year rolling contract is a con

It is an annual contract, not a 3 year rolling contract.

You trade in a 8.1 licence and get 3 years free (if a recent licence) any pay full lease thereafter.

If an older licence, you can go for 50% off annual licence forever provided you always renew lease each year (think this option can apply to newer licence if you wish).

With the 50% off, it is only £18 per year - less than cost of four pints of beer per year.

Only you can judge if that is prohibitive or not.

I'll reword it to an annual contract with a renewable ( potential increasing price) concession after 3 years .

Past history from version 8 back does not tend to support a potential major update each year, principal.

You are now still paying an annual fee ( reviewable every 3 years) and potential subsequent increase, regardless of any guaranteed major product updates.
Previously existing home users paid a one off fee, and a concessionary fee per further version, which in the long run is less . (! ?)

The 3 year concession is only for somebody who trades in a qualifying V8.1 i.e. they get 3 years lease.

Thereafter they are like those who did not get a concession i.e. they renew annually AND price may (almost certainly I suspect) go up annualy.

You cannot lock in at a fixed price lease for 3 years.

I of course reluctantly did a version 8 trade in , hence why I mentioned it ........
