New "Rufus" Upgrade; What About Updates?

Hi, new member here. Out of curiosity I upgraded my HP Elite 8300 to Windows 11, so I can see if it's worth upgrading my other machines. All of which are non-W11 compliant. This machine has a TPM 1.2, and no secure boot option. I used the latest Rufus version to get around that, and the upgrade went smoothly. I also have retained my local account.

My question is, since it is a non-compliant computer, what is the status of updates? I am getting Defender updates daily, no problem there. I assume the system is updated to March, since I did the upgrade after Update Tuesday. But what will happen in April? Will I have to update manually, and will they be security-only updates?

Thanks, Mike

A non-compliant PC will get the normal Monthly Updates, driver updates, and Defender updates. You will not be offered Feature Updates, which would be W11 26H2. Only compliant PC's are offered upgrades (notice "upgrade", not update).

It's generally believed 26H2 will be activated in the form of an Enablement Package. Which means if you keep up with the Monthly Updates, some time this Fall (October?), you can manually install the EP package and transform 25H2 to 26H2, even though you're unsupported.

From a security perspective, MS would rather allow you to patch an unsupported system than deny you Monthly Updates. But they don't want to help you do free upgrades, so that's a manual process.

Thanks Garlin, exactly what I was looking for. The explanation about Microsoft's motivations in this regard is most helpful.

I don't want it either. I was just wondering about regular, ongoing updates. If I do successfully transition to 11, I'll be wary of the increasing bloat and intrusiveness. I've already uninstalled Edge and Copilot.

I use a program called Winhance. Very easy way to debloat Windows. You just check the boxes and it does the rest.

All updates are offered and installed without checking compatibility on unsupported computers, except those upgrading to a newer version. To upgrade an unsupported computer to a newer version you have to manually download the newer ISO, disconnect from the internet and bypass compatibility check before running Setup. Rumors have it that 26H2 will be available as an Enablement Package for systems running 25H2. This means that it will be a simple update installing in a couple of minutes without checking compatibility. All we need to do is to manually download it, as it won't be offered via Windows Update to unsupported systems. This also means than any unsupported system that can run 24H2 and 25H2 can also run 26H2 and will have official security updates up to November 2027. Then hopefully 27H2 won't introduce any other hardware requirement and rule out our old systems.

To remove unwanted updates or Windows features you can try Revo Uninstaller.
