Hello,

I have to announce that, from now on, I will not be in charge of developing and maintaining UniGetUI anymore. Devolutions Inc., a Canadian software company, will replace me, and will be in charge of keeping this project alive.

As you may already know, UniGetUI is a side-project I have been developing in my free time. However, nowadays I don’t have as much free time as I had when I started this project. The number of people using UniGetUI has been increasing non-stop (we recently hit 300.000 monthly active users, an all-time maximum). Nevertheless, having more users means I need to invest more time into UniGetUI, and I just can’t keep up.

Therefore, I am very proud to announce that, starting from today, Devolutions Inc. will take over UniGetUI.
The fact that UniGetUI is now owned by Devolutions Inc., does not mean that UniGetUI will stop working as it does today, nor will it not become paid/freemium. UniGetUI will remain Free and Open Source.

The migration process will be transparent for everyone. This repository will be transferred to their organization, and the new official web site will be UniGetUI | Devolutions instead of the old UniGetUI - Martí Climent. The only noticeable difference will be that, instead of some random university student, the team behind UniGetUI will now have the knowledge, resources and time needed to be able to deliver a solid product.

It has been a pleasure to create and bring UniGetUI to what it has become. I am also very proud to see that I have been able to sell what started as a side project. And I know for sure that the team at Devolutions will do an amazing job with UniGetUI.

You can check their blog post explaining the acquisition here: UniGetUI enters its next chapter with Devolutions

Thank you for everything,
Martí Climent

So how does Devolutions get to monetize this investmnent? Can we expect that UniGetUI will become a paid (subscription) product any time soon?

Based on their site, they seem to have a few subscription models already for other products.
Enjoy it while it lasts.

Been there in a related context. That "promise" lasts only until quarterly profit is lower than the previous quarter.

It did not take too long to have some functionality issues after Devolutions took over.
The program now is written for multi-platform use and as a result, the Windows version suffers:

1- The 'Start minimized' option triggered by unigetui.exe --deamon no longer works past version 2026.1.3
There is no way to get it to start minimized.
2- UnigetUI Widgets which could be informative to some no longer work past the same version 2026.1.3
3- There are cross platform bugs such as wrong detections of updates, Powershell 7 updates not being detected and many others problems.
4- The installation package has also grown substantially. almost doubled in fact as well.

To those who are are , unlike me, willing to continue with this product, a new release is out which does not address any of the issues listed above.

It did not take too long to have some functionality issues after Devolutions took over.
Corporate bureaucracy, no matter how small the organization.
The program now is written for multi-platform use and as a result, the Windows version suffers:

Do you think they just tried to massage the existing code, or do a complete rewrite?
1- The 'Start minimized' option triggered by unigetui.exe --deamon no longer works past version 2026.1.3
There is no way to get it to start minimized.

Possible.e that this feature needs more work to be multi-platform. Or, or, or the new owners just didn't see the value of this feature.
2- UnigetUI Widgets which could be informative to some no longer work past the same version 2026.1.3
Diitto
3- There are cross platform bugs such as wrong detections of updates, Powershell 7 updates not being detected and many others problems.
Insufficient testing?
4- The installation package has also grown substantially. almost doubled in fact as well.
So the installer itself is multi-platform? Otherwise, how does Devolutions justify this?

To those who are are , unlike me, willing to continue with this product, a new release is out which does not address any of the issues listed above.

I'm taking a wait and see attitude.

It starts minimised but doesn't close to the system tray :woozy: Some errors on reporting if some apps installed correctly but they do install. So I'll go with @x509 for now and will wait and see. Thanks for the heads up @OAT.

Edit, on reboot it starts minimised to sys tray and now also closes to sys tray. A bit flakey :zip:

Is UnigetUI the only packaging software out there that does this sort of thing?

Aren't there any alternatives?

I do not want to go back to bad old repetitious days of having to update each app I have manually.

Nor am I gonna pay a subscription for it, either

~

Good for Marti, not sure it's a good thing for the many users.

That's what happens with one-man shops. I've seen it happen before. Guy develops something, it gets wildly successful, then he gets in over his head and has to do a sell-off.

Corporation then offers it for free for awhile, then when you get people hooked in on it, BINGO! It's pay-up time. Some will do it. Others will vote with their feet and move elsewhere.

It's an old and typical story.

This UnigetUI is just a lazy method of auto checking for updates. Won't be a biggie for me if it goes belly up.

winget upgrade --all --include-unknown is easy enough to type.

It starts minimised but doesn't close to the system tray :woozy:
Edit, on reboot it starts minimised to sys tray and now also closes to sys tray. A bit flakey :zip:
Yes, I should have mentioned that as it's a hit and miss. Works OK some of the time.
It started twice on one occasion...
But version 2026.1.3 is still solid.

It's an old and typical story.

.

How do you know that the developer didn't just have that in mind from the start?
Take the product as far as he could and get good $$$ by selling?
Marti never sounded like it was getting over his head. He also had over 50 contributors.

Yup, absolutely.

I don't. I generally trust them at their word. -- I mean, you've been pretty faithful posting their updates here. You didn't think he was trustworthy?

If he was nefarious from the start then why wasn't this mentioned back in the beginning?

Or I could've missed that. -lol - ;-)

What is nefarious about selling the fruit of your labor?
I really do not get your train of thought, sorry.

Nothing at all. But you made it sound like a shady greed grab.

If UnigetUI is a program to stay away from, then let's hear it.

Really? It surely was not my intent at all.
I am very happy for Marti .
I think it is the goal of any developer to try to get an app published just as a writer would for a book.
I chatted with him a few times when he was trying to implement his program as a UWP.
He was always very receptive and kind.
