New Windows 11 Pro Computer - 1st Setup

Seems things have changed a good deal over the years and I have a few (71) but have built and used many MS systems. My issue at the moment is setting up this new PC using a username and password. I don't want to use a MS account or have any data saved on OneDrive. But I need to get past the setup process and use as described. I saw a post on another forum but that didn't work. It was supposed to turn off Wi-Fi but apparently didn't. I hesitate to disconnect the router as we have a fibernet system that includes our telephone. Not sure if powering off the modem will disconnect the phone or not but rather be safe.

Any suggestions on activating this system without the using a MS Account?

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. That's OK for a clean install, but I understood the OP's question as relating to a newly purchased PC with Windows 11 pre-installed.

Going by the title “New Windows 11 Pro Computer - 1st Setup” I was assuming no installation, yet. I suppose it’ll have to be confirmed by the OP

If setting up from scratch on a new system that has no OS yet installed, as suggested above

  • Create the install media with RUFUS.
  • When instigating the creation of the media and clicking “Start”,
  • The following options will show. Select your choices. Click OK then the USB install media will be created on the USB

This is where I was failing until I disconnected the modem. Then the process went smoothly. I really appreciate the assist.

Issue resolved and my post wasn't clear. It is a new system and it did have the system to install on the m.2 drive. On starting the system the setup would begin the setup process. No physical disk was provided to install from. My initial attempt should have worked but evidently I wasn't disabling the Wi-Fi as I had thought so it failed in several attempts. It doesn't help that I'm totally exhausted from a 14 day trip but I did want to get this system up and running. It is intended for astronomical image processing from my imaging systems both at home and in remote areas.

I was far more use to the systems shipping with CDs or thumb drives of the included softwares/drivers and such but that seems like a time gone bye.

Thanks for the support. Hopefully after the 4 day conference later in the week I can then spend more time installing the needed catalogs and processing programs.

Got you both beat at 85.

Set up 3 new Notebooks this year, worked easy to follow the Microsoft Account. Since the first User is always an Administrator I created a new User on each as Local Account with Admin rights and no password, right-clicked the Start button, signed out/logged off then rebooted to get both Users on the log-in screen. Chose the new one then removed/deleted the Microsoft Account then rebooted, no issues.

Yes, long gone. Starting with Windows 10 you can reinstall Windows from it's own WinSxS Component Store. In the case of an OEM install you may keep the OEM installed apps and drivers. Windows 11 has expanded on these options, including reinstalling Windows from the cloud.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Windows has indeed changed a great deal over the years. The systems I use to build were in need of serial ports for telescope equipment connections: mounts, telescope focusers, rotators, cameras, and so on. Most are now USB thankfully with much faster response times. Some of the first systems were DOS based.

Thanks for the backup and recovery advice. That will indeed be very helpful. Even though the system is 99% processing data the star catalogs are massive being able to recover is important as there are many supporting processes and scripts added outside of the program.

Then you want to look at making a system image, this is a backup of the machine as it stands now, with all the installed software and all your user files. A system image can restore the PC to exactly as it was when you made the image.

There's plenty of 3rd party imaging software to choose from, some free, some paid for. Hasleo seems a popular free one. For myself I use Macrium Reflect, this used to have a Free option but that has been discontinued (though Reflect Free v8.0 still works in W11 if you can find and download it). Reflect is now a subscription product.
