Newbie here, need help updating Windows 10 Pro 22H2 to Windows 11 Pro 25H2

I'm not sure of the protocol, as I've never posted here before.

In a nutshell: I've tried all variations that I know of, including Windows 11 Installation Assistant (which was a disaster several times). The closest I've come is building the w11 25h2-en-us ISO, mounting it, running setup, and following the prompts. There are numerous restarts, ending with:

We couldn't install Windows 11
We've setup your PC back to the way it was right before you started installing Windows 11.

0xC19001010 - 0x40017
The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation.

It does return to Windows 10 most of the time.

Windows 10 is Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.7663).

Using Windows 11 Installation Assistant is worse, as it doesn't necessarily restore Windows 10 correctly.

I have stopped trying until I can find some help.

I should also note that PC Health Check finds no problems, and WhyNotWin11 (2700) is positive on every entry

Update Device Drivers​

Insufficient disk space can also trigger the Windows 10 upgrade fails error 0xC1900101-0x40017. To free up disk space.

can you check your disk management
Window tools > Computer management > Disk management

and see if your boot partition is either a MBR partition or a UFI system partition please

That's incorrect.


Note the 9th generation Core I7.

Back us your important data, download the latest win 11 ISO from either Microsoft or uupdump.net and fresh install using the Rufus ?
Updating is generally messy and takes up a lot of unnecessary space too !

First, make sure you are running the latest bios for your device.

You would need to look at the failure logs to see the cause of your failure. Depending on where in the install the failure occurs, the log can be in multiple places.
If no error message occurs, the following log files are created when an upgrade fails during installation before the computer restarts for the second time. You have to look at these logs to get an idea of what's causing the failure.

My last upgrade rolled back during second boot phase also so I found my particular error in the last 2 logs. Mine ended up being a corrupt user account so I had to clean install, but that phase failing can also point to a driver.

If logfiles do not direct you to what caused the error, I advise anyone to not waste his time. Either stay where you are or Bite the bullet. back up your data, and do a clean install. 25h2 will have you chasing your tail for days.

To add on to what @glasskuter said, you can use the SetupDiag tool to read the logs and tell you what went wrong. Way easier than reading them yourself. I often pass out when trying to read logs and wake up later with Cheeto dust all over myself.
