Windows 11 Pro
I am running the latest Win11 downloaded from this forum today.

I cannot set a default app for .jpg, I want it to open with Irfanview, it keeps opening with MS Photo unless I right click and choose Ifanview
As you see .jpg does not exist.

But if I search for .gif, that's OK. Anyone any ideas how to fix or is it a bug.

I have tried all you suggest to associate this file, I just tried .gif, .txt, .pdf and when you select properties there IS a change button, but try .jpg properties and it does not have a change button as shown. It is if Win 11 has this file association missing. When I do a windows search for *.jpg I get no results, yet I have thousands. ???

Are you sure there's no issues with you jpeg files, cause I can change my file association just fine. That said, I don't use Infanview (Photoshop user) so I can't say what it does on doesn't. Anyway...

I think I have found the fault, in Irfanview 64bit the association with jpg & png keeps un-ticking itself.
I tick it, click Ok to save, close it down. Open it and the ticks have gone.
I have just uninstalled Irfanview and reinstalled it again along with the plugins and its just the same story again.
So it would seem Irfanview has a fault with Win 11 but not with Win 10, I will use MS Photo until I sort it.

This may be moot, but have you tried running Irfanview as an administrator (Right click, Run as administrator) and tried to set the associations that way? I had to do that with 7zip back in the day.

The only problem with "Run as administrator" is you then keep being nagged to approve using the app 😟

Where are you saving Irvanview ? Hopefully not in Program Files.

Irfanview is working OK for me. How are you getting the Choose default by file type screen? When I go to Settings > Apps > Default apps I can scroll down to IrfanView and click on it and select what file extension I want IrfanView to open.

You don't need to run as a Admin. I'm using my user account and not my Admin account and IrfanView works OK.

I'm not talking about log-in accounts. I was talking "Run this program as an administrator" from the Combability tab of said app...

When you do that every time you go to open the app windows will greet you with the nag box "Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device". Yeah, you could simply right click and choose run as administrator, and be greeted then, but be aware that setting doesn't stick, thus the check box under compatibility tab ;)

When I got up this morning I was greeted with 6 Windows updates which I executed.
I wondered if it might cure the .jpg fault I have. I then went into settings/apps/default apps and typed in .jpg in the search for "Set a default for a file type" and this time it came up as associated with "Photo" whereas before it could not find that type of file.
I clicked on the Photo bar and selected Irfanview as the default and it changed OK and now all my images open with Irfanview as they did in Win 10.
Many thanks to all for the help :thumbsup: :star:

I have this exact same problem with Irfanview Ver. 4.58 on Win11 Ver. 21H2 Build 22000.132(Dev Channel) in secondary drive.
I DO NOT have this problem with Irfanvirew Ver. 4.58 but on Win 11 Ver. 21H2 22000.132(Beta Channel) on primary drive.
For some reason the Dev version won't let me change the default for JPG by any means.
