Solved No association with .jpg files

I had this problem on Beta channel 132. Need to go to default apps select Photos and change jpg to irfanview, and anything else you don't want it pinching while you are there.

Thank You Claim.
Under photo it don't even show .jpg as an option to set a default for it. Funny that it does work in .132 Beta but not on .132 Dev.

Really funny indeed, as 22000.132 is the same in dev and beta. (I believe that the beta channel hasn't received the app updates, but those aren't part of the OS.)

I went looking, and for some reason, WIndows 11 will not let you set an association for .jpg / .jpeg /.png /.gif in 22000.132 clean install in my system as well. I'm highly irritated by this.

I have this problem, but with MP4, MOV and WEBM video files

So, the collection thus far:

I'm a little confused. What do you mean Windows won't let you set an association for jpg. What are you trying to associate with .jpg???

jpg is a filename extension associated with a particular format - in the case image files. With that did you mean "open with"?

That's the "Open with" box and has NOTHING to do with file associations. What that does is tell the system to use this "suitable" app to open a particular filename extension. For example, Windows by default will use the Photo's app to open a jpeg file, but I can change it to "open with" say Photoshop, which also handles "jpeg" files, or I could say open with Infanview since that also handles jpeg files. However, if I try to use an app that does not support the filename extension - .jpg. I will be told this app does not support such files.

Again, I'm confused as to what the real issue is???

I'm trying to set .jpg to always open in my chosen image viewer (IrfanView, for me). In Windows 10 I had no issues doing so.

In my current clean install of Windows 11, though, there is no option to set an association for that .jpg file type. So double-clicking on a .jpg image in Explorer always opens it in Windows Photos.

Searching for jpg does not show it as modifiable (confirmed by the first 2 screenshots)

So the only way to do this is if they either fix it, or else I do it manually in the registry.

I also confirmed that every file type I listed above cannot be edited in Default apps - they can't even be found by search.

I don't know if this is because of clean install, or if it is system wide for all 22000.132 builds, or if this has been this way for longer than the current build. I only found this out because I clean installed, previous, with the file types associated with the apps I wanted them associated with in Windows 10, an upgrade did not revert them, the files still opened in the programs they were originally associated with.

Yes, I know I can right click and choose Open With - but the whole point of file associations is to be able to set a default program to open files in. Right click and open with is a massive PITA when your work flow includes hundreds of images to evaluate and edit.

So, as I suspected, that's an "Open with" or file association (open this file with this app) issue, not a jpeg issue.

That said, have you checked to see if Infanview is fully compatible with Windows 11. Have you checked the Infanview forums to see if others are having the same issue?

And NO, you can't "edit" file types in default apps. Not even in Windows 10. Now if you mean re-assign (open with), that's a different avenue.



Anyway, as you can see above I have the jpeg/jpg file extension, and I can also chose another file to open with. This is under Windows 11, 22000.132. All the option shown has to ability to open jpeg files.

That said, the best way to associate a file type with a program is to right click the file, choose open with, click Choose another app, and search for the suitable app (the reason you "choose another app" is so you can lock in that choice should you wish to). I just did it on my Win 11 machine and had no issues....



As you can see above, I changed my jpeg files to open with JRiver Media Center 24 (this app also handles jpeg files). You'll also notice the icon changed to the program the jpeg file opens with.

And yes, you should also be able to change file associations (open with) under default apps by clicking the box with the arrow, choosing your program and clicking "OK". Again, works on my machine.

Anyway, I don't see this as a Windows 11 issue as both my Windows 11 laptop and desktop perform as described above.

Just as Johnlgalt posted in message #29, we do not have the option to set .jpg extensions to default to Irfanview instead of Photo. (See my messsage # 22.

As far as Irfanview working with Win 11, well it works fine on 22000.132(Beta) but not in 22000.132(Dev) for me. Same PC two different SSD's, one for each build.

I understand this is on a Dev build. Just trying to see if there is a workaround since it could happen to other users in the future on final versions.

Not really - because I showed screenshots where what you see some of us are not seeing.

This is not an Irfanview problem, - it is a Windows settings problem. What you show doing is not available to do for the extensions I listed in my post at all - in any, manner, fashion, or form.

I can use right click and open with an IrfanView is populated in the list, along with Photo Viewer, and others:



But the default application associated with .jpg files is Photo Viewer, adn neither can we uninstall it, and noehter can we change the Windows association of that file type to another program.

And, in my case, at least, as I said, this only happened when I cleanly installed Windows 11 - it was not an issue in the WIndows 100 --> Windows 11 upgrade scenario.

Furthermore, trying to use Open With only allows for that one instance. If I try to use Choose another app:



I only get the option to open that one file I've right clicked on - I cannot make IrfanView the default. Or any other program, all of which are registered .jpg file handlers, the default:

Hmm, now jpg and bmp have disapeared from Irfanview on this PC and are no longer listed under Irfanview, Photos or anywhere else, however clicking on jpg now opens in photos, yesterday it was Irfanview. Obvious answer is to get rid of Photos, uninstall greyed out, so removed it via Powershell. I suspect that just opening Photos yesterday while checking if apps actually worked might have caused this, whatever I've got rid of Photos. I've got at least half a dozen better Graphics programs than Microsoft Apps that are trying to take over my preferences!
For anyone who isn't aware, you can get rid of unwanted MS junk with no working uninstall option.
For Photos, PS as Admin
get-appxpackage *Microsoft.Windows.Photos* | remove-appxpackage

Gone and jpg opening in Irfanview again and jpg and jpeg showing under irfanview in default apps.

That may very well be it. Upon opening the Photos app (which it was the default for on a clean install) it somehow locked it. And since I cleanly installed, I know at least once that I went to open a picture and forgot I had not installed IrfanView (which is how I discovered this entire debacle in the first place).

I don't use Photos anyway, so I'll definitely be removing it here shortly

right click the file, choose open with, click Choose another app, and search for the suitable app (the reason you "choose another app" is so you can lock in that choice should you wish to).

Anyway, I think I found the issue with Irfanview under Windows 11. When I installed Irfanview, I could assign Irfanview as the default app for jpegs. However, opening a jpeg app would not open in Irfanview, even though default apps show the app as the default viewer. That said, and this is IMPORTANT, in trying to "solve" the issue, I rebooted. Now looking into Apps > Default apps > Choose defaults by file type, I too am missing the same extensions as you...

That clearly tells me Irfanview is the issue or the app isn't properly configured. Anyway, removing Irfanview gave me back all those missing extensions above. So, again, not a Windows 11 issue. BTW, I installed version 4.58.

Oh, and I never said anything, or insinuated that the default Photo app should be uninstalled. I've never even thought about doing that. It doesn't take up space, or use resources when not used. And it's not bothersome so I see no need to remove it. But that's me.

I agree with Johnlgalt, a clean install may be the real culprit. My Beta version was an upgrade from Windows 10 with app already installed and working normal. My Dev version was a clean install and I can't designate Irfanview as the default for .jpg files after installing the app. I do remember opening a .jpg right away and having Photo open it. That reminded which remind me to install Irfanview.

Did you actually read what I wrote about my discovery on Irfanview? Based on that, I disagree about this being a "Windows 11" issue per se. It could be Infanview is not yet fully compatible with Windows 11, but I don't see Windows 11 as the culprit itself.

Anyway, it would help to clear the air if Johnlgalt removed Irfanview, rebooted and checked again for those missing extensions.

Ummm, I specifically addressed that, Please read my post 2 replies above your reply.

There is no Always use this app. Even if I select Photos.

Not trying to be rude, but this is NOT the first time I've changed this association. I've been doing it since Windows 7. This is the very first time this association is simply not available to change. For these specific file types only.

I don't know how much clearer I can be.

To further reiterate that this is not normal behavior:

I picked an image, which I have named as 120.png, which is posted in a thread above - No association with .jpg files - the very last image. You can hover over the image in that post and verify the name.



I'm using 120.png as my example - it is one of the file types that Windows is refusing to allow change to a different app.

After selecting Choose another app, I see this.



You can clearly see that Photos is preselected.

Scrolling down, there is no "Always use this app...."



"but, but, but - that's already the slected app!" You might say.

OK. Let's pick a Windows pre-installed app - Paint.



Note the scroll bar on the right - it is fully scrolled down.

There is no "Always use this app" button / link / selection point.

It gets worse, I just clicked on a png and it opened in Print Pictures? And again it's now vanished from Irfanview in the default apps and missing again in file asociations
And annoyingly same has happened to jpg, shouldn't have rebooted I guess!

Checked the Registry and it says irfanview.png and irfanview jpg.
