No email program has been associated

it doesn't matter what email program I set as default. I've tried outlook, Gmail (installed as app), bluemail. I always get this error. I've reset the default, changed the default.

Critical issue: what program is giving that message? It is looking for an Installed E-Mail Client such as Outlook [not outlook.com], Thunderbird, the now-discontinued IncrediMail, OE Classic, eMClient, etc.

Outlook.com, Hotmail and Gmail are Webmail.

He means what are you trying to do when you actually receive the message in your post title.

For example, are you clicking on a mail link on web page, trying to reply to an email inside an email client (program), ... ?

If you have Thunderbird installed then do you see as shown on photo in Settings>Apps>Default apps>Thunderbird?

right clicking on a file in file explorer>more options>send to>mail recipient

I must be looking in the wrong place. I don't want to use outlook anyway, I just set it as the default to see if I'd still get the error.

I've used outlook, bluemail, right now I'm using gmail but so far not loving it. My only requirement is that it work across platforms on all my devices. I've tried using them all as the default. It still doesn't work.

I just tried your exact method. It asks me to create a profile in Outlook (the one that comes with Microsoft Office, not the personal Windows Mail that is now called Outlook (new)).

I then checked the default apps in Windows Settings. Sure enough, I'm set up for Outlook as my default mail client.

Notice, in green, it says Outlook - not Outlook (new).

I then set Windows Mail as the default mail program, and look at the .msg item - still says Outlook.

Finally, I tried to change the defaults for .msg - it does not recognize Thunderbird, Windows Mail, the Outlook (new), and I suspect many other programs. This seems to be hardcoded to look for Outlook (from Office).

However, as with most file extensions, if you scroll down, you can manually set your own program.

Use that to set the program you actually want to use and see if it sticks and starts working the way that you want it to.

Was the outlook that came with Office a web server? I downloaded Office but outlook there just takes me to outlook.live.com. I give up. Did you actually get the send to>email recipient to work with Outlook?

No, it is not a web server. How, exactly, did you download office? It is a paid product. And not the Office online tools, the actual, installed on your computer, Office.

Once I set up my Outlook profile, yes, it works perfectly fine. I have a paid subscription to Microsoft Office but I haven't had a need to set up Outlook since my last clean install of Windows.

Windows store, it is Microsoft 365. When you open it, there IS an option to purchase, so I don't know if this is a truncated version or what. In any event, when you open the outlook app included, it's the web server, not a stand alone.

Yeah, you'd need to purchase and then install the items locally. I *think* you can install just Outlook without needing to install everything, through some advanced parameters, but not sure if you are allowed to use it solely without paying for a subscription.

However, you can find really, really cheap keys for the Office product that might also work - and then do a custom install to use which parts you want. However, that does require at least a little money (though far less than a subscription overall), and is not a recurring sub, but a one time payment for the Office Suite itself.

But, before we explore that route, let's look around to see if someone somewhere might have figured out a way to bypass this direct tie to the Outlook program.
