No Internet Via Router

Regregtably your issues cannot be resolved in this forum. You need someone sitting at your computer to resolve your issues. It'll be money well spent.

Most modems are given by the ISP with your login credentials already programmed. So you just connect it, turn it on and works. However, if you reset the modem most likely these data are lost and you need to manually enter them using the modem interface to connect again. Assuming you get internet from the modem, you have to connect the router from one of the modem LAN ports to the router WAN port. This basically tells the router to get the internet from WAN port and propagate it through its own LAN ports. That done, connecting your computer to one of the LAN ports of either the router or the modem should give you internet connection. If these simple steps don't work or you find it difficult to do yourself, call a professional to do it.

Huh?

Never seen that with a Xfinity cable modem or any cable modem for that matter.

Normally you activate it once connected to the system.

Perhaps you are thinking about fiber and PPPoE.

Let us start over: My Dell XPS had been sent directly ti the Level 3 lab, the highest level and quickly repaired under warranty. I put it back on line, and within an hour the entire monitor was filled with text stating that none of the built-in troubleshooters would work.

Given that and that the computer was locked up, I made a decision to replace it on the grounds that it seemed to me that the computer might be repairable, but even so, would likely not work well and might fail again. I ordered a new Dell desktop computer, which I had to put aside for a while, moving my wife's XPS into what I call my computer room. I attached the cables, turned in on was connected to the net.

By then, I must have installed and been using the new modem and router. I had so many things interfering with my installing the new computer, but was compelled to do so last Thursday. That it when I called Nelson and asked for him to come to our house and assist me. It did not take me long after installing the new computer that I realized that I had no knowledge whatsoever on how to use a Macrium X full backup under the given situation. The only thing I knew is that the Macrium Rescue program would not work, as it was created with an entirely different computer.

Nelson applied his knowledge and left after the unusual use of that backup had begun, knowing that it would take several hours to complete. Therefore, when he left I had no way of knowing that the router would not connect, do I could not ask him to connect it during this home tech support session.

Oh I see. Did you try the steps we suggested? Connect the modem first and see if you have any internet, then try to connect the router?

I am not sure. having just found this: I have two connections: The expected ethernet one as the computer is connected to the modem via ethernet. The unexpected one is a Proton VPN entry with states that it is connected. I have Proton VPN installed, and I have started to peruse the directions about this.

Any advice about enabling the VPN connection through my router, if in fact I am even understanding correctly its presence and connection status is offered, all I can do for now is to say in advance that would be greatly appreciated.

Now you accusing me of actually remembering things? Okay, here is one: Monday, 17 September, 1973, at approximately 1700 Hours Local, five people, including me, met at the U.S. Post Office in Crested Butte, Colorado. As I had in my possession the very important letter from the Gunnison County Board of County Commission. That letter stated that the State District Court had approved our application to create the Crested Butte Fire Protection District in accordance with state law. That led to a five to none vote to created the district, followed by a vote of four to none, with one abstention, myself, whereupon I was appointed Fire Chief. This was a culmination of twenty-seven months of effort on my part, so, yes that day was remembered.

That trivia was from my vast collection of my thirty-three years of serious involvement with the structural fire service community worldwide, but I suspect that you understand. That taken care of, I would be more than happy to follow the steps that you provided. Meanwhile, with the modem on-line, which takes it a while, and connected directly to router, once the router was plugged in shortly thereafter the lights number 1 and two are now on. That is because I had found out a way for the router to find the network, Netgear04, which is on the router tag.

I have followed several paths suggested in several sources to connect to WiFi with, of course no connection made. I did find earlier today, in Windows while directly connected using ethernet, two entries, ProtonVPN and Ethernet 2, both connected. I have not reset to connect the router to the modem again, which I will do and report whatever, if anything I find. I don't know how long the ProtonVPN entry has been there, but I do not believe that it was two days ago and perhaps not even yesterday.
