No more Safe to Remove Hardware banner (toast)

Your Subject mentions (toast), could that be referring to a PoS [not that one] Point of Sale type of device connected to the computer with its associated software?

I think, actually, @Wynona, that you get that AFTER you right-click the thumb-drive icon in the tray and get the so-called balloon, a washed-out rectangle that offers "Eject <name of device connected>". When you click Eject, you get your shot toast in #20. Right?

Nope. "Toast" is one of the names for the kind of pop-up @Wynona shows in post #20 above. THAT's the one I'm no longer getting. It appears to pop up out of the tray. Thus, "toast."

Yeah, you're right. Right click the icon, then click on Eject.

Interesting thing, though! I right click the icon, then click on eject, and am told it's safe to remove the drive. At this point, I leave the USB drive attached to the port.

So, if I go back to do the same thing (without having pulled the USB drive out), the icon will have disappeared! Click on File Explorer to check and the USB drive is no longer listed. Makes sense, but I was still surprised that I will have to pull the drive and reinsert it before it will again be usable.

Yep. Once you click Eject, the external device is disconnected, and it's not available for anything or listed anywhere. Gone.

I reseated every connector to the MB, reseated the four memory sticks, reseated the PCIe stick that holds my second NVMe, and removed and replaced the suspending bracket for the front end I/O ports on this PC. I had worked a lot in there a few days ago, and I wondered whether I had dislodged something or loosened something without noticing it. I may have. Several things snapped tight when I moved them. Tiny clicks, but clicks.

You get the same result when you have multiple internal disks and you use Disk Management to put one of the disks OFFLINE. A right-click on the Disk and a click on Offline, and it disappears from File Explorer and becomes unuseable for anything until you put it back online. Some people use this for disks that they use for backups and storage only. They put the disk Online, then put images and whatnot on it, and then put the disk offline. The theory is that the disk is then protected from malware that might infect the other disks. It's not clear that that always works out, but it's an appealing idea.

Thank you. That was a nice find. I appreciate your searching. But I don't want a third-party solution, just a Windows setting or a registry tweak. Resetting all to default didn't resurrect my dead pop-up banner-toast. And I don't find a Manage where the proposed solution says I should. In short, nothing I've found on the Net explains why I have the toast on one PC, but not on the other. Tx for trying, though.

I dunno what's going on here. I just got the toast on the PC that doesn't usually show it, but it was with a thumb drive, not my external drive. Hmmmm.

But only once. The next time I plugged in a thumb and used it and then removed it, no toast. Weird. I think I'm gonna take @Ghot's advice and pay attention to the disappearing icon. If it's gone, it's all good. Ghot.

? Neither of the responses in that thread were outside of windows capabilities. I just clicked “do not show again” on the remove notification and then followed the second recommendation there and it restored the popup on mine…

1. Go to Settings.
2. Tap Apps.
3. Tap Default Apps.
4. Scroll down and Tap Set Default By App.
5. Scroll down and Tap Safely Remove Device.
6. Tap Manage when it appears.
7. Tap Safely Remove Device. Nothing happened on the screen when I did step 7, but I got the Safely Remove Devicenotification back the next time I wanted to remove a flashdrive.

Windows has changed a bit since that was posted, under set default by app, just search for “safely” and “Safely Remove Device” comes up. Should be set to “URL:ms-xgpueject”

Sorry, and thanks for trying, but no. Safely Remove does in fact offer URL:ms-xgpueject, but the Eject process doesn't produce the toast. I'll try rebooting to see whether that makes a dif, but I'm skeptical.

A simple setting to try is System -Notifications -Set priority notifications -Apps -Add apps -Choose an app -Windows Explorer. Might help ?
