Numlock issue

Hi All,
I have a friend who is having a issue with the numlock key. It is shutting off and on randomly while using the keypad typing or just when idle. When the light goes out it may type a symbol or just move the cursor to another position on the page that is being typed on. Sometimes he has to press the numlock key to turn it back on or it will just turn off and back on automatically. I have googled and done almost everything I could think of besides checking the bios numlock state if his MB suppports it. I will do that after work hours today. The mouse keys are disabled, the power state is off. I changed the registry key to the number 2. I have removed all Logitech software which was a supposed to be one possibility. I changed the keyboard to a Microsoft one and same thing is happening so it is not the keyboard. Changed the mouse also.
Does anyone here have any idea what the issue is? I am open to all suggestions I don't have much hair left on my head at this point lol.

Cheers

Been an issue with windows for a long time. Create this batch file and create a scheduled task to run it at whatever interval you want

Code:
@echo off

POWERSHELL [CONSOLE]::NumberLock | FIND /I "FALSE">NUL&&POWERSHELL ($WSH = New-Object -ComObject WScript.Shell)-AND($WSH.SendKeys('{NUMLOCK}'))>NUL

I think that you might well have muck underneath your keyboard keys or a damaged keyboard cable and that the NumLock issue is merely another symptom of that.
Try disconnecting the keyboard then waiting to see if the symptoms still happen.

@Try3 I tried 2 other keyboards. what are the chances all 3 are dirty. One of the Microsoft keyboards I have been using on a daily basis myself and never have that issue. All 3 keyboards are very clean. Thanks for the tip though.

Task:

general: Only when logged on; highest privileges
trigger: on a schedule; repeat every (10 mins or whatever); indefinitely; enabled
action: start program - the batch file
conditions: uncheck all
settings: allow to be run on demand; if running does not end force stop; if already running = do no start new instance

been running on my rig for about 2 years and havent had the numlock issue since i put it in place. prior to that solution i had it randomly turning off since day 1 of installing the official win 11 release

highest privileges
I hope you don't mind me butting in but I do not believe that highest privileges are required.
I've just been testing your excellent code in std-level cmd prompts in Win11 26H2 & Win10 22H2 and they work consistently without highest privileges i.e. without elevation.

All the best,
Denis

ok so I created the batch file and put it in the \windows\system32 folder and created a task. The scheduled task seems to run fine. The numlock light stays on but flickers every 5 to 10 seconds. If it flickers then the numbers pressed on the keypad are not put in. What is causing the numlock to shut off for a split second? Could another running program cause this to happen and if so which one I wonder? My friend uses caps for all letters when filling out a invoice. Only once the letter went to lower case when the numlock light flickered. Now I don't know if that is a issue also. This issue is getting beyond me lol. Any additional help would be great.

The script you've been given only does anything if the NumLock is off. If NumLock is on then it just checks and ends.
So if your NumLock light is flickering every few seconds, you must have a running utility that is continually turning it off.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was wondering. Tomorrow I will go to his shop and see if I can disable a app at a time to see if that is causing it. Meanwhile I am still searching for answers here on my computer. Each thing I find that is different from what I have already tried I will print it off and check out in the morning. Thank again

Perhaps Task mgr, Processes & Task mgr, Services lists will give you a useful shortlist of items to investigate.

Just an update. My friend is still having this issue. The script will keep the Numlock light on solid but every now and then the numlock keys will not do anything. Seems to just stop working and then after 10-20 seconds it will work. I have done just about every fix that I can find on the internet. I am still searching :(
