Windows 11
I've seen quite a few older Thinkpad X1 carbons for sale quite cheap. Obviously most of them are older than 8th generation, but does anyone know if they will actually run Windows 11 (using an older hardware install)? Or is there something that precludes this happening with these models?

Yes I saw that, which surprised me because Windows 11 only supports 8th generation onwards doesn't it? I was looking at some a bit older than that as well though. I know most older hardware will run windows 11 - with the right instal - but have heard some machines won't for some reason or other. So I was just checking if there's some reason the older ones wouldn't run it perhaps.

Just wondering if a "6th generation" laptop uses 8th generation processors perhaps?

Don't confuse X1 Carbon generation with CPU generation...Carbon Gen 6 use Intel Gen 8 CPUs.

Just bypass compatibility check (see relevant threads) and you can run Windows 11 on any Intel dual core or newer computer and respective AMD models. I have installed Windows 11 on an Intel Pentium 4 6xx CPU (first Intel 64-bit family) with 2GB RAM, so anything higher should work. If there are no Windows 11 drivers, you can use those of Windows 10 64-bit or 8 64-bit or 7 64bit. For really old models even Vista 64-bit drivers will work, of course the newer the better.

Legacy MBR installation, no TPM, no Secure Boot, no WDDM 2.0 graphics drivers, cannot get more unsupported ;) This is only my test laptop. I had installed Windows 11 here before upgrading my main PC. For my main PC I use everyday see my 2nd system specs.
