"Later version of Onedrive installed" is the error message and no way to remove "later version" or any version since I've tried to take ALL of Onedrive off. I've spent hours with repetitive Copilot trying to remove any and all of Onedrive on my Windows 25H2 (OS Build 26200,7171) on my new Dell Optiplex 7020 which came with W11 pro. Would a "reset" help out? I may decide to abandon Onedrive which always seemed piecemeal, but I would like to have everything operating in case I decide to use it. I mean I can't face more anguishing hours trying to go thru the elaborate fixes that Copilot, with its disturbingly chatty voice, wants to lead me through. Numerous attempts to reach live MS remote tech end only at more Copilot. I. Am. Stuck. Any suggestions for me? Thank you, truly. LarryG

Welcome to the forum. The procedure to correctly deal with onedrive has been posted on this forum many times. However, I feel like using this procedure might not work for you at this point since we do not know what dark path co-pilot has taken you down, leaving both your system files and your user account in an unknown state. Because of this @EB2XR6 suggestion will not help you since a recovery won't fix a user account.

I would try this first.

1, Create a new LOCAL user account. (Make sure you change account type to Administrator) This new account will not be tied to Onedrive.

2. copy any files you have saved locally to a usb drive.

3. Restart and log in to the new account

4. Go to Onedrive ONLINE and download all of your files into this new local account. Microsoft OneDrive
Also copy any files you saved to usb into this account.

5. Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware Portable.
  • Open Revo and look under Windows Apps to find OneDrive.
  • Uninstall Onedrive using Revo, then run Revo's scan feature. Check all the leftover files and registry entries Revo finds and remove them.
6. Delete the old account

In the future you can still manually copy files into Onedrive Online if you choose to do so.

Only if the above does not solve the problem, you can reset and remove everything which would put your system into an out of box state. If that proves to be necessary, report back and I can tell you how to create a local user account during setup.

To uninstall Onedrive is a bit of a hassle. The steps need to be followed as noted in the link below.
(the answer to your question is; it depends on the steps taken to uninstall it)

Hi - If you uninstall One Drive does it also eliminate the files it has saved - I want them erased.
Hi Patsy, If you have your own issues with Onedrive I suggest you open your own thread if it needs discussion. But to answer this question, NO. Uninstalling Onedrive does not delete the files saved in Onedrive. Files already in Onedrive stay there until you login to Onedrive online and delete them.
Neither can you just arbitrarily delete Onedrive without leaving a mess behind.

That is a different scenario than this user's problem so if you are interested in finding a simplified explanation of how to unlink from Onedrive see Post #15

Evidently "local user" option is being denied in Windows 11? So I don't want to go there. Numerous attempts to take off the newer version of Onedrive or any version of Onedrive on my computer have failed. Ignorant deleting of items that include Onedrive is reckless but I've done that out of desperation. I dread "reset." Doesn't that mean I have to reinstall all applications? I could probably devote a couple days to that and I wouldn't mind if I can get Onedrive up and running. (I do use it as part of Onenote). So I guess I'll grit my teeth and see what happens. Absolutely no luck getting Microsoft support (it used to be quick and helpful and easy).

.
Sorry but your post doesn't make sense to me. You first say you've tried to take off onedrive. Then you say you want to get Onedrive up and running because you use it, There is a procedure to unlink your account and device from Onedrive then delete Onedrive. There is another procedure to use Onedrive and link your account & PC to it.

You either want to use Onedrive or you don't.
What EXACTLY is your end goal? What have you done thus far in your attempt to deal with it?
Do you use Office 365? Office 365 automatically saves to Onedrive by default if you don't change the options in 365.
It depends on the current state of your device as to what you need to do. The more you've done in trying to deal with this, the harder it is for us to figure out how to resolve it.
Evidently "local user" option is being denied in Windows 11? So I don't want to go there.
No, you can still use a local account.

I dread "reset." Doesn't that mean I have to reinstall all applications?
A reset and remove everything puts the device in an out of box state. So yes applications would have to be reinstalled.

"A newer version of Onedrive is installed" error message instructs me to remove it. When I try to install Onedrive from the online download. I am trying to remove the "newer version" and nothing works including 2 tech sessions, in one of which we lost connection and she didn't call back. Numerous attempts to reach MS tech again failed. I would have liked to continue to use Onedrive but now out of necessity and after several days of frustration, I'll simply not use it and go online to access it. You say 365 remains active with it. Thank you for that bit of info. Sorry to bother with this dead end problem. LarryG.

It does but you have to go into the options for each 365 app and change this if you want to save files to your system drive.. You will lose the autosave feature in 365 if files are not saved to Onedrive.

Know this aa well. You can not just arbitrarily uninstall Onedrive. Here is the proper method to use.

How to Properly Remove OneDrive from Windows 11

When you sign in with a Microsoft account, Windows automatically sets Documents, Desktop, Pictures, and Videos folders to use OneDrive as their default storage location. These folders are NOT on your system drive.

If you don’t want to use OneDrive, you’ll need to carefully follow the steps below. Skipping or rearranging them can cause issues with your files and folders.

Important:
These instructions assume that OneDrive is still installed on your PC.
If you’ve already uninstalled it, for this procedure to work, you will need to first reinstall OneDrive by downloading it from Microsoft’s official site.
  • sign in to OneDrive, and then continue with the tutorial.

Step 1: Turn Off OneDrive Folder Backup Syncing

First, you need to stop OneDrive from automatically syncing your Desktop, Documents, Pictures, and Videos folders. This guide will also help you get your files back on to your local drive.
Turn On or Off OneDrive Folder Backup Syncing in Windows 11

Only If the folders don’t automatically return to their default local location under C:\Users\YourUserName in step 1:

Use the tutorials below (Option Three) to manually restore the default location of each folder and move your files from Onedrive into it.
Move or Restore Default Location of Desktop Folder in Windows 11

Move or Restore Default Location of Documents Folder in Windows 11

Move or Restore Default Location of Pictures Folder in Windows 11

Move or Restore Default Location of Videos Folder in Windows 11 |

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Step 2: Unlink Account & PC from OneDrive

After syncing is turned off, disconnect your account and computer from OneDrive:
Unlink account & PC from Onedrive.

Once you do this the files you have in onedrive will remain there until you login to Onedrive on the Web and delete them. Microsoft OneDrive
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 3: Prevent OneDrive from Starting Automatically or Uninstall Onedrive

At this point, you can either disable OneDrive from autostart or uninstall it.

NOTE: Office 365 and Ofc 2019-2024 DEFAULT save location is Onedrive. You will have to go into each Office app and change its default save location to a folder on your computer. (file>options>Save>Uncheck save to onedrive by default and Check Save to computer by default. Select a local folder where you want files saved.)

To disable Onedrive from auto-starting. This is my preference.

  1. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
  2. Go to the Startup Apps list in left pane.
  3. Find OneDrive.exe, right-click it, and select Disable
It you want to remove it from file explorer navigation pane Add or Remove OneDrive in Navigation Pane of File Explorer in Windows 11

If you want to hide it in the task tray, Settings > Personalization > Taskbar "Other system tray icons". Find Onedrive and toggle it off. Alternatively, you can quickly hide an icon by dragging it from the taskbar onto the upward-pointing arrow that opens the hidden icons menu.

Once you re-start, OneDrive will no longer launch at startup and the only place you will see it is in your start menu.

To Uninstall OneDrive

Method 1 – Using Revo Uninstaller (recommended):

Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware Portable.

  • Open Revo and look under Windows Apps to find OneDrive.
  • Uninstall it using Revo, then run its scan feature. Check all the leftover files and registry entries Revo finds and remove.
Method 2 – Built-in Windows option:
You can also uninstall OneDrive through Windows settings, but this may leave some registry entries behind. Uninstall and Reinstall OneDrive in Windows 11

--------------------------------------------------------------

Following this sequence ensures your files are safe and your folders return to their proper locations, while OneDrive is disabled or completely removed from your system. Note: Whether this will work as written for you depends on what steps were taken in your prior attempts to get rid of Onedrive. Sometimes a user’s incorrect actions can have unwanted results. Nevertheless, your files should still be in Onedrive so they are not lost.

Don't have Onedrive icon on taskbar. All I have is Onedrive not syncing and I can't find any reference to Onedrive trying to follow those directions. Nothing allowing me to link or unlink. But thank you! I simply want to get rid of the "A newer version of Onedrive is installed" so I can load Onedrive on my computer.

I am storing all this information for future use. VERY helpful, as I proceed in using Windows 11.
SUCCESS!
MS Technician connected with me, dis a long remote session with my computer and succeeded (after 3 tries) to
download Onedive to my computer. Not only that he restored my Start menu to its default form since I had messed it up.
I have never been more relieved. Unfortunately I can not describe what he did since he did a good number of processes and I didn't want to interrupt. Thank you for your help that is instructive in use of Onedrive, etc. Larry Goodell
