Oops! Wrong Partition!

OMGosh, I was supposed to be upgrading Windows 10 to Windows 11 Beta on my Dual Boot system! Everything was proceeding until the first restart.

Being a creature of habit, when it restarted, I automatically clicked on Windows 11 RTM rather than Windows 10! Urgh! There was no way to stop the installation so I let it proceed (as if I had a choice). At the next restart, I clicked on Windows 10, hoping for the best . . . Windows 10, totally unaffected by the first part of the installation, opened.

Once installation finished, Windows 11 22000.708 is no longer in existence; I now have Windows 11 22622.290.

Thank goodness for my DATA D HDD! At least I didn't lose any of my files! However, it looks like everything is now on OneDrive. I didn't forget to click "Save to this PC", instead I chose to let OD do its work.

Out of what could have been a complete disaster comes a learning experience. Let Windows do the partition choosing when restarting.

I was hoping so, but so far, my second monitor isn't recognized. I cannot live without it, since it's so convenient.

Welp, I wound up having to do a do-over. The weird way I'd installed Windows 11 Beta 22622.290 led to some real problems, to say the least.

Instead of a clean install of Windows 11 Beta, I decided to update to it from Windows 10. Then I clean installed Windows 11 20000.795. Now all I have to do is install the apps I want on 20000.795.

I wound up with two Windows 11s to choose from. So, to know which of the two Windows 11 installations is which on the dual boot system, I had to edit them.

While in the Production partition (everyday PC), Click on the Start Menu, start typing Command Prompt. When it pops up, click on Run as Administrator, then type the following and press Enter:

bcdedit /set {current} description "Windows 11 Production"

Do the same while in the Beta/DEV partition and type the following

bcdedit /set {current} description "Windows 11 Beta"

You can change the bolded words (they don't have to be bold in the command) to anything you like; just be sure to use the parentheses around them.

As an example, bcdedit /set {current} description "21H2" or bcdedit /set {current} description "Insider" or bcdedit /set {current} description "DailyUse" or bcdedit /set {current} description "Test Bed"
