Why not? Thunderbird supports IMAP. You have to use the OAuth2 method (basic authentication is no longer accepted).

If you have two-factor auth turned on your MS Account, go to the MS Account web portal and create an app password. Provide the app password in lieu of your normal MS account password.

Suggest that you sign up for a trial for office 365. Set up 365 Outlook to link to your online account. Download all email, which will could take overnight, if not longer. Then sort through the Inbox by FROM, to save off into a different folder those emails you really want. Then select (cntl-A) all the other emails in the INBOX. Then delete. Probably another overnight operation. Clear out the TRASH when the delete operation finishes.

Restore the saved off emails to the INBOX. Be sure to sync with the online account. If all works as I expect (hope) it does, then your online account should be in good shape. At that point, delete Office 365 from your system.
