My intentions as were for W7, to clean install, update and create a full backup of W11, without any 3rd party app. Than MS OFF, and lastly all 3rd party apps and creating full backups at each step.

M. Reflect is the ONLY exception to that.

Trust me on this... 99% of the folks on here and on TenFroums.. use one or the other of those two partitioning programs.

You'd want the backup on something larger than a thumb drive, I'd think. Either an external spindle drive, which is much cheaper, or an external SSD drive works.

I have an external spindle seagate usb 72K HDD for backups, mostly never exceeded 16 GB.

From Windows 8 onwards, every PC supplied with Windows pre-installed by the manufacturer has its OEM Windows key embedded in the bios firmware. When booting from Windows 10 or 11 install media to do a clean install Setup.exe can read this key and uses it to choose the correct edition to install (Home or Pro) and to activate it. You can read this key yourself with ShowKeyPlus.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

From Windows 8 onwards, every PC supplied with Windows pre-installed by the manufacturer has its OEM Windows key embedded in the bios firmware. When booting from Windows 10 or 11 install media to do a clean install Setup.exe can read this key and uses it to choose the correct edition to install (Home or Pro) and to activate it.
