One additional note: Tenth Gen Intel graphics are known to work very well with Windows 11 so don't give up! I'm certain that this is solvable.

Thank you. Any idea how to get rid of the copilot window that is open? There's nothing to click to get rid of it!

It hadn't gone into hibernation but I will set the screen not to go off for longer.

Yes I let Windows install the HP driver first and then add the Intel one. But it just reverts back again at some point. Does the same on my main laptop. That one is ok on 23H2 but if looking at some things, the graphics crash - not very often.

Another thing. When right clicking on recycle bin to empty it, the window doesn't fully open saying delete multiple items. It party opens but gets stuck. Last time it did open after about 30 seconds but this time it just didn't. Shows the desktop photo in the box and just the heading "delete multiple items". Takes a couple of goes for the window to open so you can delete.

Ok set sleep to never and turning off screen to an hour (haven't disabled fast start up as yet). I let Windows install the 2020 HP graphics driver. Then installed the latest Intel driver. Windows update then downloaded 3 intel extensions and a different intel graphics driver, which it is trying to install. After opening a browser window, settings now won't open from the task bar (it was already opened and dropped to the task bar). So no way of closing or opening it right now from the task bar. Opened settings again from the start menu and it wants a restart to install the intel driver it's downloaded.

So it's installed the 2020 driver again but it's an Intel one not and HP one.

The latest HP one says 2021 so tried downloading that (although it might be the same 2020 one even though it says 2021). Installed that (I think) and it's still showing the Intel 2020 one. Whether it's the HP version that's installed or not I'm not sure. Neither machine seems to let me install a later graphics driver.

So as the latest intel one was still showing in control panel (it also installed the intel graphics command centre) I decided to uninstall it.

This left me with a dimmed screen, couldn't find any screen display adjustment settings. And it's using a microsoft basic display adapter. So I'll try installing the HP display driver again.

The HP display driver doesn't seem to install and I'm left with the microsoft basic display one. So guess I'll put the latest intel one back again. And I keep accidentally hitting copilot when going to file explorer so that is open again and can't be closed!

Latest Intel driver is now installed again and brightness settings are back. Will just have to see if it stays installed now or if Windows update downloads the 2020 one again.

Other than that things are just generally a bit slower to open - slightly laggy. Right clicking on waste bin might settle down. Worked ok just now.

Just checked the blue screen error from last night. Seems to be related to drivers I think, but not sure which one. Driver power state failure 9f.

I had a look at the minidump file which was a bit obtuse to me, but it seems to be NT Plug and Play PCI enumerator

Installed Intel Driver and Support assistant and it flagged wifi and bluetooth drivers to update so I've installed those.

Windows update has again downloaded and installed 3 Intel extensions and the 2020 driver again. So it's going round in circles.

I'll just have to leave the 2020 driver installed and test a bit longer and see if the screen stays ok.

I have seen that on my System One with its Radeon graphics drivers. I found that if I go to Device Manager and roll back to the previous driver, then Windows Update stops trying to replace it.

Thanks Bree - I couldn't actually see the option to rollback to previous driver - just update, disable or uninstall. Intel Driver and Support Assistant of course popped up telling me to update the graphics driver again. I'm trying again but this time not ticking the box to execute a clean install. See if that works.

Ah ok. You have to select properties first to find rollback driver. If it happens again I'll try that next time.

Interestingly though, Intel hasn't installed the latest 2025 driver. It's installed a 2023 driver. So maybe Windows will accept that one. Or maybe it did that because it knew Windows had removed the 2025 driver?

HP should really update its drivers. Latest ones say 2021 (but seem to be actually 2020).

Do you have Windows Pro 11? If so, you can set Windows Update Group Policies to not download Driver updates. You can update to Pro on Stack Social for $15: Microsoft Windows 11 Pro | StackSocial . I expect there are Registry settings you could tweak in Home, but you'd have to dig them out. You can also set Windows to not automatically download and install at all using Policies, although I've had mixed results with those (Could me my system; I've had update quirks that are yet to be ironed out).

You can also set Windows to not do updates at all and use something like WAU Manager to handle checking for / doing updates. WAU will let you avoid Driver updates. It's more like the Windows 7 interface. Free/Donate: Windows Automatic Updates Manager

You can also get everything up-to-date by using Intel's software/site and then run the Microsoft tool "Show Hide Windows Updates" to hide the driver updates. http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f22d5fdb-59cd-4275-8c95-1be17bf70b21/wushowhide.diagcab

It will let you mark updates as "Don't Install". However, you should to be in a stable state i.e. you have everything you want installed and set, you run the tool and let it check for updates, and then you mark the Driver's "no". Otherwise you'll end up with updates stuck in the Windows queue and you'll have to do some other annoying things to make it believe it's up to date.

I do actually have a pro license on one of the computers (in my microsoft account). Didn't bother to upgrade it to Pro after installing because I didn't want bitlocker and didn't think it did much else extra, but it seems it does from what you say

Yeah, I've run into "Adjust that feature through Group Policies" enough times while tweaking Win 11 that it's been well worth the upgrade cost.

I'll almost guarantee the Windows will keep trying to downgrade your driver. Once it shows up in the update list it will stick. Depending on your options, it will install. If you set things to "only install when I say so" in policies, at least you can avoid it. Then you can run Show / Hide to hide the updates. Then you can run the (new) Windows Troubleshooter to clear the win update cache to get it removed from the official update list.

Win Update is a real PITA now.

Exactly as I stated in post #28. We've seen it time and again where if one allows WU to manage their drivers, older drivers will sometimes be installed and the kicker is, unless the older driver causes issues, the user most times never knows it. Unless you disable "include drivers with WU" chances are you will probably get it again.

Well this time I won't ask windows updates to search for new updates. That's when it downloaded them again last time. If it starts playing up I'll probably know it's reverted the driver again - then I'll try rollback next.

So is it worth using my pro licence then? If I do, can I disable bitlocker? Don't want all that hassle again! Turning it on and off doing system images etc - that was a pain.

An upgrade from Home to Pro should not turn on bitlocker. Device encryption is only on by default for a clean install (even for Home). For Pro, device encryption would then become full bitlocker on the first sign in with your MS account.

I wanted Pro for two things: Group Policy and Hyper-V. I'm no longer using Hyper V, but the Group Policy was definitely worth it IMO. I can't answer your bitlocker questions.

If you want to Configure Automatic Updates without Group Policy, you can try adding these keys. From Manage additional Windows Update settings . There are many other settings available through Group Policy, some of which you can access through the regular user interface, some of which you can't.

The only item you should need to tweak here is the AUOptions. That's the one that selects how you want updates done, or not. The possible values are detailed in the link to MS that's above.

Note that NoAutoUpdate in this key does not shut off Updates, it shuts off the rest of these options from having any effect.

I'm already signed in with a microsoft account. I don't really want bitlocker ........ I can't even find encryption on my current 23H2 set up strangely, and I'd like to keep it that way! Had a load of hassle trying to turn it on and off when doing images previously.

Incidentally, Google AI just told me this. Microsoft has removed 10th generation from the official supported processor list for 24H2! Not nice!

Ok it seems fairly stable on the spare laptop now and hopefully that driver will stay put. So have done an image of my main laptop and decided to install 24H2. And try and sort the drivers out after it's installed. Downloaded Intel Support Assistant in readiness.
