Unless you have unusual software, hardware or complex network requirements, I think you will find 24H2 painless.

Incidentally, Google AI just told me this. Microsoft has removed 10th generation from the official supported processor list for 24H2! Not nice!

"Yes, 10th generation Intel Core processors should still be supported by Windows 11 25H2, even though Microsoft has removed them from the official supported processor list for 24H2. Microsoft's removal of 8th, 9th, and 10th generation Intel CPUs from the 24H2 supported list was not meant to indicate a lack of compatibility, but rather to inform OEMs about the processors that will be used in new Windows devices
Just means MS now won't licence OEM's make/sell PCs with Windows pre-installed if they use a 10th gen or older processor. Has no effect at all for consumers, Windows 11 is still fully supported on our 8th gen and up processors.

Apparently it was all a bit confusing when MS first updated the requirements, but clarified now.

Microsoft said:
Editor’s Note: Updated February 27, 2025 This Learn page is continually updated to reflect the Intel® processor models that meet the minimum system requirements for Windows 11. It is intended for OEMs and ODMs to understand the following CPUs may be used for new Windows 11 devices. A page update made on February 13, 2025 did not reflect accurate offerings. It has since been updated, including the addition of Intel® processor models 8th, 9th, and 10th generation Intel® CPUs, and the reclassification for select Intel® processor models to support Windows 11.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, and 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2.

So if I did use my pro license upgrade - can I turn off bitlocker permanently? And will that stop any issues with making/reinstalling system images?

Ok I've upgraded my main laptop now. It doesn't look any different 🤣 Snaps doesn't seem to be working. I checked in settings and it's turned on, but the button is black (I think it was blue before?). I didn't want it but it would be nice to know it was working.

Do I need to run dism? Or is it not necessary after just upgrading? It does look a bit different to my clean install on the identical machine - I'm sure the start menu was bigger and the copilot screen was definitely bigger. Anyway I'm not complaining that it looks the same as before. Apart from context menus for rename and some little pin icons in file explorer, is there anything else noticeable?

Check your resolution and the "scale" (zoom) level.

It never hurts to check the windows schtuff before and after installing a feature update IMO.

At the command prompt, Run as Admin:

Check the log files for any reported errors with: Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /checkhealth
Then do a deep health check: Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /scanhealth
Then fix any errors found above by comparing to MS servers: Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth
Then fix the local store vs what's now on your machine: sfc /scannow

You can also "Clean up the Component Store" with these two commands. The first one will tell you if there are any large discrepancies in size between the actual storage and the calculated storage needs for the current version of components. The second one will actually fix that if the discrepancy is large.
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Note that the Component store cleanup, as I understand it, will leave you unable to roll back to previous versions of Windows as it removes them from the store.

Thanks. I think I do have my screen resolution set higher. I'm quite happy with it as it is as it doesn't seem much different to before 🤣 However I suppose if something isn't right I ought to sort it out. Edit - nope I'm on the recommended resolution.

I'm still on the old graphics driver too and no issues as yet (fingers crossed). I think that happens more with clean installs. I had the same issue previously on the same machine with a clean install and ended up clean installing 10 then upgrading to 11 as it seemed to be less glitchy (that was a long time ago).

Anyway I'm happy - my upgrade seemed smooth, no issues (so far) and everything seems much as before. If something isn't working that I didn't want then I might just ignore it!

Btw - so what happens in October when 23H2 is no longer supported and 24H2 has been out for a year? Another big upgrade? 25H1?

Well I don't know about you but I'm not updating to 24H2 until November so I'm not gonna worry about it too much. In 6 months, anything can happen so hopefully most of the fixes to 24H2 will be done by then. Beside, it's better somebody else deal with those headaches than me.

Still, it's interesting to hear and read about them until then.

I never rush to the latest-and greatest (a relative term) ;-) so being a bit behind has it's advantages.

I have already upgraded now :-) Did an image first and all seems fine. My upgrade is actually much better than my clean install. Snaps isn't working but I didn't want that anyway and I'm wondering if that's graphics related. It doesn't really seem a lot different after my upgrade. Labels in context menus and some little pins next to folders. Co pilot can be unpinned from the task bar (and/or pinned to the start menu).

Now last year it was unusable on the same laptop. In a way I'm relieved I've upgraded now so I don't have the constant nagging and pausing updates.

Now I think back, this particular machine always had issues trying to clean install Windows 11, that I couldn't quite resolve - and I had actually clean installed Windows 10 again, fully updated it and then upgraded to Windows 11. So it seems to be the same now. It does better with an upgrade than it does with a clean install of Windows 11. There must be something still in there, from Windows 10 that helps keep it stable with 11. I know that's not a very scientific statement - but perhaps someone can explain it!

The upshot being, my test computer (identical laptop) with Windows 11 clean installed, wasn't a good test. With that one I might try installing 10, upgrading to 11 through to 24H2 and presumably it will be similarly stable (regardless of graphics drivers). Considering my main laptop (that I've just upgraded) is still fine on the 2020 graphics driver that Windows seems to like being installed.

I'm also wondering if this is why Snaps doesn't work. Something in 10 behind 11 is keeping things stable on the graphics front and preventing anything it can't handle - maybe?

It's kind of annoying because I like doing clean installs! But also even more important I have system images if doing a clean install of 11 in future isn't going to be an option.

It feels like I'm still running Windows 10, with a few addons.
