I never succeeded in downloading any free apps.

Because store apps, free or not are all auto updated.

Agree it's certainly good to have unified update system for installed software.

These errors are usually accompanied with error code, is there an error code?

Are you using blocking firewall? this might be reason for failure.

I don't use it. I use a local account, just like every other Windows version.

Honestly... every day on these forums, I see people having problems with an MS account.
It "may" have been a good idea, but if you don't "need" it... take it out back, kill it, and bury it.

A Microsoft account incorporates some good ideas, but the implementation is pretty bad.

It shouldn't be "forced" on folks, and it should be more like... registering hardware/software at a website... with perks.

Nothing, other than maybe Windows activation, should be "forced" on consumers.
Google is the leader in invasive practices, and Microsoft seems to be trying to emulate Google.

No there is not. This is all I get:

I use the standard firewall in MS Defender, never changed anything on it.
I don't see how that could make this error happen, when MS says the fault lays in their system.
But as mentioned before: I am not very much interested in apps from the store, only have tested some in the past.
And I was thinking my pointing at possible problems with MS-store (when you don't have a MS-account) would help the TS to make his decision about what to do. For me it's no problem at all not being able to use those MS-store apps.

I used MS account since it was introduced many, many moons ago. At first it was E-mail (Outlook) account as that was among the first. Still using it among other E-mail accounts as it's very secure. That's just one of perks for having it.
Other reasons are:
Since W7 I haven't had any problems with transferring and activating windows on upgraded and new hardware and I must have switched at least 10 generations since then.
Some of my preferences are synchronized between other PCs. Laptops and devices (had a lumia 640 windows phone) all under same account.
I was able to get, use and run Beta and insider versions of Windows and some applications/games.
Store and Store APPs. I wasn't and still am not big fan of them but there are many good ones now.
Must mention security again. There were several attempts to hack and brake in my account but was blocked every time unlike some other ones even big ones like Yahoo that was compromised several times.
Things I don't use and or uninstalled.
Cortana in first place.
One Drive
Windows help.

i still use a local account on my pc. Just force of habit more or less. With that said, i have a Microsoft account and i do use that for OneDrive, the Store and Office365. So, guess I am using both.

I found why this message was appearing:
Some day, long ago, I disabled some services, to make the start faster, as I did before in Windows 10. One of them was the service Microsoft Store-installationservice. I did that, because I supposed without account you could not download and/or install apps from the sore. Which appearantly was a wrong statement.

After setting that service to manual, I indeed can install free apps from MS-store.!

Thanks a lot, I will look in future if there are any apps I can use.
I do have the apps I want, but one (the calculator) is in the wrong language (was already so in the installed version of Windows 11 pro when I bought the system).

Until I joined this forum, it never occurred to me that one could even set up Windows without having a Microsoft Account. I've had a Microsoft Account ever since they were first implemented in the last century.

What is the advantage of having a Windows installation set up using a local account?

The main advantage is that if something goes awry with your MS account it doesn't lock you out of your PC. I've lost count of the number of support questions I've seen here and on Ten Forums along the lines of: "Help, I can't sign in with my Microsoft account any more, it's asking for a local password and I don't recall ever setting one up.....".

A Microsoft account is more secure than a local account. There are ways to reset the password for a local account without needing to go on-line. that's not possible if you sign in to the PC with an MS account. But it's a two edged sword, if your MS account has locked you out of your PC there's no way I know to get back into your account. Believe me, I've tried. My cousin's husband passed away leaving no record of his MS account password. It was my sad duty to retrieve as much as I could of his personal documents and photos.

Wouldn't contacting MS or following pwd reset work?
Assuming ofc. you set up recovery mail and 2FA via phone.

All too often those asking for help never realised they needed to set up anything like that. Often the cry is that they can't reset their MS account password because they no longer have access to the email account used to set it up in the first place (for example, it was a mail account from their ISP, and they've changed ISP since then).

Maybe there should be a basic competence test that must be passed before one is allowed to purchase a PC! :eyeroll:

I can't imagine not having passwords secured in a Password Manager. My Password Manager is also set up to guarantee succession.

Of course, if your mobo fails, you will need to buy a new licence if you do not have a full retail key, as you will not be able to transfer the digital licence if you use a local account.
