Windows 11
I use the program FreeFileSync. It plays sounds when a compare or sync is complete. With Win11, it no longer plays the sound.
The FreeFileSync forum responded to me as to what function they use. I wrote a quick .Net program and ran it on Win11 and my Surface Pro. Win11 does not play the sound file while the Surface pro does.
Function PlaySound Lib "winmm.dll" Alias "PlaySoundA"

Anyone else having this issue?

Win11 does not play the sound file while the Surface pro does.
For starters, are you positive that the Win 11 machine plays any sound at all (system sound, media player, etc)?

Yes, I am watching YTTV right now. As a test, I went into system settings, sounds and Program Events: I ran the sound test on many of the windows events (Exclamation, Device connect, etc) and they all work. I even downloaded an older version of the dll and pointed my test program to it. That still fails. It seems like windows does not use the same dll, just guessing.

I cannot immediately see anything that suggests win32/winmm.dll is depreciated on Windows 11. Had you tried running the FreeFileSync program in compatibility mode, by any chance?

No, but I just tried it and it did not help. Run as admin did not help either. Seems like a Win 11 bug.
Side note: compatibility mode let's you select Win 8 or less, not Win 10.

Have you checked the file is actually win 11 compatible? or is there an update or patch for it?

I'm not sure what you mean. I am running Win11, did properties on the file and set the compatibility mode.
I don't know how to check for an update or patch to a system dll.

What I meant is is FreeFilesync compatible with windows 11
Are you running the latest version 11.15 released on Dec. 3rd.
Check the program to see what version you are on, if not the most recent, get it from

I do have the latest version 11.15 (64bit). I just tried compatibility mode and run as admin. Neither helped.
I downloaded the latest version as soon as I detected the issue. The prior version did not work.

Did it work with Win 10, if so I guess it is incompatible with win11

Yes it did. I posted messages on their site. This is their response.
I'm not able to reproduce this on Windows 11, so it doesn't seem like a general issue. Unfortunately, the Windows PlaySound() function does not return error details on failure.
This is not a big problem, just annoying.

So if it works on theirs on 11 so the program is compatible then it must be your setup somewhere along the line. these things take awhile to sort by process of elimination
