    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Unless MS has a new build ready for release, I don't see much happening until sometime in January.

Hi folks
I don't have any problems with W11 so far apart from the rediculous old fashioned look of file explorer GUI and its bonkersly long past sale by date of max 266 chars in path/directory/file names.

I have a 20TB array of music/ videos etc on a NAS so some file names will get very long just for the sheer size of the 20 TB array. Internally Ms has fixed this but older programs including File Explorer are still using the older API - which gives the mega bonkers 8.3 type file names once those "Real names" get longer than 266 chars.

I see all sorts of comments about icons, desktop themes etc - but if that's all people want then why bother updating the OS at all -- Windows 3.11 had a decent file browsing system !!! and the old MsDOS application of XTREE was also good !!

I've got WFW 3.11 installed in a VM. Got it off my old Gateway 2000 system CD. I gotta say, Windows has come a long way since then.

I've been using Windows 11 as long as it has been available to developers, and bottom line, I enjoy using it way more than Windows 10. It only gets better with every aggravatingly slow update. It could be so much more but I still like it.

I'm still on the fence about Windows 11. It just seems like Windows 10 with a new skin and a new coat of paint. I can't really see a lot of difference to be brutally honest.

Since public Insider builds of Windows 11 got first released I was excited about the new OS. It has a lot of cool new features, but it is not production ready yet. My system just died for no apparent reason.

Only things I've done is install Steam, VS 2022 and Minecraft and Discord. Been only using those apps/games and starting the computer in the morning, then closed it in the evening. But it simply just broke for no apparent reason.

No I don't love Windows 11 anymore. It's unpredictable and in a way unintuitive, while very good at the same time. Has the same bugs first Windows 10 release had. And I hate that. New skin with old baggage and pointless system requirements.

I want an OS that is fast, does not require you to have a "modern" (less than a few years old) computer. I'll stick to Windows 10 until the support ends and then I will reassess the situation. Might stick with 10 even after that or go Linux only if things don't change soon.

Don't get me wrong though. Windows 11 has a lot of awesome features which I love. But the restrictions MS has set and the bugs that keeps popping back in outweigh all the awesomeness tenfold. Either an OS works or it does not work. Windows 11 works sometimes and sometimes it does not. Can't live in this "maybe it will work today" situation when I have important stuff to do.


Note: I am talking about the official Windows 11 release not the DEV branch

Second Note: Will keep running Dev branch on my laptop until it breaks or becomes so sluggish that it is completely unusable. The day that happens I Move back to Windows 10 or Linux there too.

Not sure yet: 22H2 added Core Isolation that slowed down my RAM speed by 1 Gbyte/sec and increased my fast startup time, with a mechanical HDD, to 40 sec. The Edge browser has improved and I do like the new MSMedia Player. I am a basic user and don't play games so cannot comment on the performance of W11; appears stable like W10 21H2.

The only thing that has changed since then was that in Windows 11 from the launch of 21H2 last October it is turned on by default. In W10 it is still off by default. Memory Integrity requires all drivers to be compatible, else it cannot turn on. 22H2 added nothing, but you may coincidentally have had a driver updated at the same time that finally allowed yours to turn on.

Windows 11 is as fast and in some cases faster than Windows 10. An it is definitely faster than Windows 7 by a big margin.

Once I got back the explorer ribbon, although with a bland grey pallet, and pretty much the old context menu, 11 is no worse than 10.
StartAllBack makes a few other changes to things like the start menu and search that suit my way of working.

I agree with you both. It may sound nit-picky, but I shouldn't have to go out of my way to get back a feature I had in Win 10 for years. It is quicker , for me.

Could be the reason for so many versions of Linux is getting/creating what is desired. After all, those are usually free while we only get the license to use Windows as they see fit. And of course Apple is more controlling over what can be done. Even back in the early '90s [my first was in '92 with MS-DOS 5 running Windows 3.1] there were choices such as OS2 and GeoWorks, a few different versions of DOS such as IBM-DOS, PC-DOS, etc. To some extent one might say Microsoft started on the wrong road when merging Win95/98/ME with NT3.51/4.0/2000 into one basic OS with modifications depending upon the use. At one time or other I had them all.

The reason there are so many versions of Linux is because they are totally uncoordinated and all believe their's is the best version.

The only thing that has changed since then was that in Windows 11 from the launch of 21H2 last October it is turned on by default. In W10 it is still off by default. Memory Integrity requires all drivers to be compatible, else it cannot turn on. 22H2 added nothing, but you may coincidentally have had a driver updated at the same time that finally allowed yours to turn on.

The biggest improvement of W11 for me perhaps is the increase in the sound volume of my Realtek speakers (audio chip ALC255) probably due to a new IDT Codex driver, MSMedia Player and Edge; was before unable to listen to news online without a headset.

That's a 10 month gap between a) and b)

Generally, the comments in b) are significantly better than the ones in a) IMHO
Kind of a good report card for MS and W11 for those 10 months (y)
