Generally, the comments in b) are significantly better than the ones in a) IMHO
Kind of a good report card for MS and W11 for those 10 months

Maybe the real reason why the comments are significantly better is because people are still drowning in a puddle of their own tears, but they just stopped bothering to complain on here, i.e. after they saw that Microsoft couldn't give two hoots about that? Case in point: only half of the tbumbnail preview on folders has been brought back by Microsoft, so that the other half of it is still missing.... LMAO!

I think both operating systems have their benefits, my main issue with most of Microsoft's products these days is the lack of consistency in the product. Icons not all replaced with new, old dialogs, some apps support new UI direction others not. Paint still does not support the black theme.

Widgets open web pages instead of installed apps, i.e. weather, photos. Makes the apps pointless. Odd design decisions with taskbar, etc

It should've been called Windows 5050. Because, pretty much everything about it is fifty-fifty, it's the type of Operating System that is half operable, half inoperable in some way.

My opinion, they were so obsessed with a centred menu that they forgot functionality. A bit like the brain fade they had with W8.

My impression there is no clear direction at Microsoft, and this can be shown in many areas. Office is inconsistent, now it's not even called Office anymore. Microsoft Apps look like each one is developed by some indie developer. Features are removed for no valid reasons, odd features added that seem pointless. Windows 10 was supposed to be the last version of Windows, now we have 11, and 12. Reminds me of Windows 8, when Microsoft showed stats and heat maps that the Start Enu is no longer needed, but third party Start Menu programs were being downloaded to add back this essential feature. Then the about turn and the Start menu reappears in Windows 10, but it's designed in a fashion where customising it or removing/adding built in apps is impossible.

Windows has also progressively become uglier, compare Windows Vista & 7 to Windows 8.

I think MS is "still" upset about the failure of Windows Phone, and that they're gonna keep pushing that idea on Windows users till they are assimilated or... dead.

That's a pretty accurate description.

Seems MS is doing everything in their power to convince computer users that "phones" are the only answer.
It's like them calling "programs"... apps. They just keep trying to brainwash the world.

IMO the solution is staring them in the face.. just make a phone OS "and" a desktop OS.
But no... MS is trying to convince us all to use... sporks.

Eye movements and mouse pointer movements are important in the particular sense that allowing the user to keep aiming focus of attention (predominantly, but only when feasible of course) toward the center region of the screen can help to improve on productivity as a result of the reduction in human stress related factors that is engendered by this. A better design would be to let the user choose to keep the icon group's left side located in a position that, although this would still be movable nonetheless, predominantly stays fixed somewhere between the left corner of the screen and the center of the taskbar. On the Windows 10 taskbar, this can effectively be achieved by placing a reasonably well sized Toolbar between the Start button and the pinned apps (to mimic the old Quick Launch). The only downside, then, is that the Start button is still fixed in the far left corner of the screen so it is still harder to reach than really should be necessary for the user to be able to achieve the specific goal that is to improve on productivity. Productivity is user-dependent on so many levels. By treating the user more like a machine than an actual human being, Microsoft has added new obstacles that are holding productivity back under the guise of "it just looks cleaner this way". You can't get work done efficiently and at the same time also stay always perfectly clean. So, whoever it was who came up with these so-called design "improvements" doesn't know the difference between hard work and just sitting at a desk while living in some kind of fantasy world.

I've done my own studies, and have proven beyond the shadow of a doubt, that letting the user choose how to arrange his desktop... drastically improves productivity.

MS might have been smarter if they would have just kept every OS they ever had, and keep the updates coming "at least security updates" and let their customers select the OS they perfer. If that would have happened, I would still be using windows 2000 or windows 7.

Technically I do too. I just HATE the ridiculous settings fiasco.
MS had already succeeded with Control Panel... the rest... all downhill.

Oh... and the automatic-ness of updates.

Me too, although I don't dislike the settings app. It just should be one place for settings.

100%.

W7 is outdated and so technically inferior, no power menu, no decent vm system, poor driver support, poor security, not particularly UEFI friendly, cannot mount isos, blah blah blah. But hey, you could have a pretty taskbar LOL.

I reckon most of those who have rose coloured specs for W7 have not used ot on years or do not actually use it for technically productive work.

W8 was a major rewrite technically and in many ways far superior, but MS lost the plot when it came to not having a start menu. Once you installed something like Start8 it was actually a good OS in terms of it technical advancements.

W10 was really only W8 with a new gui initially, and now we have W11 which iinitially was W10 with a new gui.

W7 was an evolutionary cul-de-sac like Neanderthals.

A couple of years ago or so (pre Covid), I worked in a company on a job that was still using W7. That was so painful, it was like pulling teeth.

so in summary - W7 - Good riddance.
