problem with external dvd

I have a dell on windows 11 and have just got a dell external dvd but cannot use it. i need a step by step guide as i can only find how to take it out of its box, which I have done. Any help please?

I have a couple of those drives as newer Notebooks started coming without the internal ODD [size, weight considerations] and now some Desktops don't have them. I just plug into a USB port as specified, USB 2 or USB 3, and Windows should recognize. Should be able to use it just as if internal. I used mine to copy a CD just last Friday.

Sorry but the step by step instructions are simply to plug it into a USB port. Windows will supply the driver for the drive. That's it.

Have you checked the cable is good?

I have a 2013 Asus external DVD drive and every PC (include two Win11 PCs) I connect it too works without issue.

What do you mean about the cable being good? i have plugged it into the port and it is working, but just not playing on laptop.

What is on the DVDs you are trying? I use the free VLC Video LAN for playing movies on DVD and Audio CDs. Just checked a recording captured from TV 10 years ago [Bad Men of Missouri [B&W] and Billy the Kid], works fine.

Can you open the disc in File Explorer and see a list of the contents on it?

I also have a couple of External USB Floppy Disk Drives that work but won't boot unless changing the BIOS settings.

If you're trying to play movie DVDs, Windows 11 no longer includes an application for that by default.

For DVDs, there are free players. VLC is one.

Things get trickier if you wish to play commercial BluRay disks. Trickier yet if you wish to play UHD (4k) BluRays.

They are pre recorded ballet, painting tutorials and dog training! I will have a look at file explorer, i think the video came up when I looked before but no contents. I have another look.

Sometimes, you need to associate a program with the .VOB file for it to play. If you have VLC, open the VIDEO_TS folder and find a .VOB file and double click on it. Windows should ask you for a program to play it. Find VLC Player in the list and choose that (or any DVD playing software you have e.g. Power DVD, JRivers Media Player).

Yes, ive got that sort of list but when i click on one, it says file has an extension not recognised by windows media player legacy

Windows Media Player legacy can't play DVD's. See my post VLC Player is free.

If i try and install vlc it wants to make xhanges to my device....if i reject, it wont install.

Could be corrupt or it could be in a complicated format. When was the last time you watched that disk?
