Hi. My daughter has a Dell Inspiron 5570 laptop, 3 years old and running Windows 10. When she ran the Windows 11 upgrade checker, it failed stating "TPM 2.0 is a requirement for Win 11". I checked the BIOS and there is an option for PTT Security, which is not enabled. I'm not sure but I understand that PTT is an equivalent to TPM?
When I try to enable PTT, a message appears saying "PTT cannot be enabled with Legacy Option ROMs enabled"
I'd be grateful for opinions as to how to deal with this message and indeed if I should, as I don't want to make my daughter's laptop unusable.
Thanks
Mitch

Honestly, after looking at the stuff that came up in Google for this, I'd ask in the Dell forums - Dell Community as I think you need somebody that knows that bios very well not to risk messing up booting.

Thanks for your reply. I checked the Dell Forum and the Inspiron 5570 laptop has been checked by them for upgrade to Windows 11 -successfully I presume. I would need to find out more about what happens if the Legacy Option ROMs is disabled (and how that would be done).
Thanks again,
Mitch.

All your questions can be answered by threads here at the Forum, there`s no rush so take your time :)
You just have to make some simple changes in the Bios if they are available.
I say simple now, but not so simple when I was making the changes for the first time

That has to do with the boot method. Apparently, it looks like you first need to swap from legacy boot to UEFI boot, and then you should have access to TPM.

Make a complete backup of the Hard drive(s) first - if you plan to make it ready now.

But honestly? Just wait. It's not a released product yet, and unless you and / or your daughter are familiar with how beta builds work and are willing to provide necessary feedback for those builds, you're better off staying on 10 - it's supported through 2025, plenty of time to keep using this machine and then, eventually doing what needs to be done to make it 11 compatible.

If you're game, though, then the first thin to tackle is the Legacy Option ROMs.

If you can find that in the BIOS and take a pic with a cell phone and post it here, if the Dell forums don't help, I'm pretty sure we can work with you to get it ready for 11.

Hi. Thanks for your post. Waiting to see what happens seems like solid advice. I suppose there's a chance Dell may issue a BIOS update nearer Windows 11 launch date to deal with compatibility problems. Thanks again.

Mitch,

I agree with the others that you might as well wait until nearer the release date. Anything you figure out now might change before Windows 11 reaches its release version.

Having said that, I did dig up some Dell info on PTT.
Intel Platform Trust Technology(PTT) - Dell
In brief, PTT "supports the same functions as" TPM.
- Whether or not it is similar enough to satisfy Windows 11 is not stated.
- Whether or not methods of installing Windows 11 despite not having TPM 2.0 are viable is a constraint that is likely to vary between now and its initial release [and might keep on varying as Windows 11 subsequently gets updated - I had a very old Dell Inspiron that could only cope with Windows 10 up to Version 1709.]
- It's encouraging that your model is included in the list in Dell computers tested for upgrade to Windows 11 Dell [mine isn't]
- PTT today might not be the PTT when Windows 11 is released. It might get enhanced in a Bios update.

I was also encouraged by these reports of TPM checks being readily bypassable - see DuftenderHamster post in With Microsoft's permission, OEMs can ship Windows 11 PCs without TPM - Reddit

It's probably not needed. I think that you just need the proper settings with your current BIOS. I don't find any detailed BIOS settings in downloadable documention for that Dell model, though.

Things can be a bit off. My Lenovo laptop had PTT (platform trust technology, Intel's onboard TPM) enabled in the BIOS. However, it had a status flag that showed it as disabled. I had to turn it off and back on to set it. I also cleared the PTT. That eliminated my Windows 10 PIN on the laptop, so I had to set it again. That required me to know my Microsft Account password. Which, I apparently changed without updating my keysafe.

Sadly, the I3-6100U processor in the Lenovo is Gen 6. Win 11 currently requires Gen 8 or newer. The 5570 has a Gen 8 CPU.

That reminds me of an issue with my old X58 board - if I had Intel's VT-x enabled in BIOS, all virtualization tests showed it as off. I had to disable it to show it as on.

Sadly, eVGA took a while before getting that particular bug fixed as it was 'low priority' - only a few users mentioned it in their forums.

IIRC, they did eventually get it fixed - but it was a PITA nonetheless. Sometimes these BIOS / UEFI interfaces are just off.

At least you got yours working again. As for TPM and WinHello - yeah, ran into that a few times over the last couple of months - whenever MSI popped out a new BIOS, I updated and then would forget to explicitly enable the fTPM and BAM! Windows wants my password and for me to set up a new PIN. lol.

Sorry to ask a basic question, but not having upgraded to a new version of Windows before, my daughter has asked if all her browser settings on Chrome and Edge including favourites, saved cookies etc would be carried over from Windows 10 to 11 along with all the Privacy Settings set in Windows 10? We would wait until Windows 11 is (hopefully) offered through Windows Update later in the year. We would appreciate any information. Thanks. Mitch.

Yes she can save all those settings. During the upgrade just make sure you click on "Keep personal files and apps"

Would also be a real good idea to make a complete image backup BEFORE upgrading to Windows 11. Use a program like Macrium Reflect to make your backup image on a separate drive. There is a Free version of Macrium Reflect available if you don't already have it.

and if you are really paranoid, you could simply just image your windows installation using macrium reflect to another drive before you do the upgrade which you should do since this is a leaked build and anything can go wrong.

lol, i think we just said the same thing at the same time.
Would also be a real good idea to make a complete image backup BEFORE upgrading to Windows 11. Use a program like Macrium Reflect to make your backup image on a separate drive. There is a Free version of Macrium Reflect available if you don't already have it.

Hi. Thanks for your post. Waiting to see what happens seems like solid advice. I suppose there's a chance Dell may issue a BIOS update nearer Windows 11 launch date to deal with compatibility problems. Thanks again.
The current BIOS in that laptop is already fully compatible with Windows 11.

Thanks. I suspected a BIOS update wouldn't solve the issue. I would just need to find out how to enable PTT and disable Legacy Option ROMs without making the laptop unusable. We will wait until the upgrades are available and take it from there. Would imagine there will be many people in this position. Thanks again. Mitch.

You simply have to convert your Windows installation of MBR/Legacy BIOS to GPT/UEFI. Then you can disable the legacy option in BIOS to enable PTT.
