I am asking in here because there a lot of you colonials in here :ROFLMAO:

If Puerto Rico is situated in the midst of the Caribbean, surrounded by sovereign states, why is it an 'unincorporated' territory of the USA and its peoples allowed to come and go twixt USA and the island. Surely it is the 52nd state in that case??

Strangely enough, there was a tv prog on Discovery today about Puerto Rico. So I learned a lot watching that. It says that the Americans sort of said we want, we will have. They forced people out of their homes because they wanted a bombing range, and tons of unexploded ordnance remains, including napalm, bombs and chemicals. The catalyst that made civilians take it into their own hands was the death of a local watchman employed by the ranges when a US plane dropped 2 x 500lb bombs, in the wrong place. The nearby detonation killed the man instantly and the US left the island. The area involved including the sea was declared a national wildlife sanctuary and is thriving. They also showed Black Hawk helo's of the Customs service trying, unsuccessfully, to stop drugs coming ashore. San Juan has the largest most modern techno devices known to man on the docks.
