Question about Acronis True Image

I have a licensed copy of Acronis True Image 2014 that I have been using successfully on my win 7 computer, booting from an installation CD rather than installing the program on my hard drive.

My question is, will this version of True Image work successfully on my Win 11 computer, when used in this manner? I'm particularly concerned about a program this old being able to boot from a CD. I'm having trouble getting answers from Acronis (they've always been difficult to reach for tech support).

From a quick read of the Acronis forum, Rufus doesn't like ISO files created by TI 2014. But you can use Ventoy instead.
Secure Boot has to be disabled, since 2014 is using an outdated boot image.

Is there any reason you are using such an old version of Acronis True Image?

Have you tried the Acronis Support Forum? There are a number of knowledgeable people there. I have gotten help a few times there.

One time when no one could help I was called by someone from Acronis. He did a remote connection to my computer and fixed the problem.

Back in the spring of 2024 there was a popup message in Acronis True Image. I was given a chance to upgrade to Acronis True Image 2025 (perpetual license). I had 1 license for ATI 2017 and 4 for ATI 2018. I upgraded all to ATI 2025.

BTW, I bet you might have received that offer also if you had actually installed ATI 2014.

I have ATI 2025 installed on 5 computers. I have it do automatic backups. I have the standalone version installed on a bootable flash drive. I normally only use when I need to clone drives. For example, I cloned a 1TB to a 2TB SSD. The desination data partition was automatically resized to fill the entire drive.

Note Acronis stopped selling perpetual licenses for ATI at the end of 2021 and only sold subscriptions to ATI after that. I was surprised when I was able to buy a perpetual license again. I suspect they may never make that offer again.

I unistalled a version of that software 10 years ago and it was fiendishly difficult to remove all traces of the program plus Acronis support was poor as you discovered.

I use a standalone duplicator, and just clone to another disk. I had way too many issues with all that software backup stuff, mostly trying to recover was where I had most of the issues. I have never had one issue yet with the duplicator.

Looking at the Macrium site, it was difficult for me to determine whether it can be used the way I would prefer,i.e. boot from a separate boot device (disk or flash drive), without having to install any part of the program on my hard drive, and backup to an external device.

Also, it appears that a permanent one-time purchase of the program is not an option.

Can you comment on this, please.

Yes. 99% of backup software allows you to make bootable media, so you can access backups if Windows won't boot.

Looking at the installation instructions at the bottom of your reply, this installs Macrium from the downloaded executable file directly to my computer, which is specifically what I don't want to do.
Unless I can get a version that allows insallation directly to a bootable disk, this won't work for me.

I have been using perpetual versions of Acronis True Image since 2015. All versions had a least two downloads

Installation file - to install ATI on your computer
Bootable media - to create bootable flash drive with ATI

With Acronis True Image it is important to keep up with your user account. If you log in you can access your downloads and show your product keys.

Like I implied in my last post Acronis True Image 2025 (perpetual license) was only supposed to be offered to existing customers. It was never offered for sale on their website. I was surprised that I just found it for sale on Newegg.

Once you install the MR software... that software allows you to create the bootable USB stick.

Yes, indeed!

It was 13 years ago when--after being completely happy with Acronis for several years--I switched from Acronis to Macrium. Why? On the Acronis forum, I or someone else had posted an issue, but the Acronis response was so ridiculous and unacceptable! As a result, I posted a reply indicating as such. I wasn't rude or vulgar or disrespectful or anything like that; rather, I made it clear that their response was unacceptable and we (the users) deserved better.

There were additional replies by Acronis defending their position, but I equally responded, defending my position--again, all above-board and totally respectful.

Then they had enough and guess what? They disabled my forum account!!!

Seriously?! Customers are not allowed to criticize you or your response to a support issue?!

And, so, after that, I found Macrium, jumped ship, have never looked back, and have never been happier!

All of Macrium Reflect, Aomei Backupper, Hasleo Backup, O&O DiskImage require you to install the program, and then allow you to create a bootable version.

If you don't wish to install the program on a particular PC, then install it on a different one and create the bootable disk using that.

The BOOTing part should be structured correctly for itself... it carries its own OS environment to run from. The problem may be the BiOS structure of your new W11 device. The old Acronis BOOT CD may be a LEGACY BOOT only device which will keep it from BOOTing from a more modern UEFI BiOS BOOT environment... especially if it's UEFI only rather than a possible noth environment BOOT.

If you can, I would just try the BOOT process on a similar (or exact) machine confoguration. The other possible issue may be that you're Acronis BOOT cd may not have enough driver support for your new storage devices. Nest to just give it a try...

Froggie, I will try your suggestion to give the boot disk a shot on the new computer. My current boot disk is set up for UEFI boot, but I fear that, as you mention, it may not have proper driver support for the new OS (I'm thinking here that my new system has an SSD, my Win 7 system does not). Also, I may need to set up the BIOS on the new system differently to accommodate the Acronis boot requirements. I hate messing with the BIOS - full of pitfalls there!

Using Ventoy ( bootable sticky ) with several programs on it ( partition and clone ,etc.) a Macrium-ISO also , works perfect !
Push F8 during the boot-proces , and choose the Ventoy , now you can choose which program has to start ..............

So, after choosing Macrium , make your backup or restore from a previous backup you made............ :wink:

It doesn't look like Acronis True Image 2014 when creating bootable media has an option for UEFI.
