Question on Updating

My PC build is fully compliant with Win 11 new TPM requirements.

I read that at official October 5th release, that they will begin rolling out upgrades to compatible machines, but that could take into 2022.
Seems they won't have official ISO builds at launch?

Should I update to the latest Beta build (clean install from ISO), and activate using my Win 10 Pro license to be sure that I won't potentially be stuck waiting for the upgrade from Win 10 to hit my machine?

Just want to make sure I don't end up having to wait until 2022 to upgrade, and besides I would prefer to have a fresh install over an upgrade from 10 to 11.

Appreciate insights.

If you join the Beta you will not have to do a clean install. After the upgrade you can switch to the Release Preview between now and Oct 5.

But the first thing to do is make an image backup so that if anything goes wrong (highly unlikely) you can restore to Win 10.

An ISO of Win 11 should be available shortly after launch, and you can then do the clean install. Again, make sure you have a current image backup.

Hello, @Globespy and Welcome to Eleven Forum!

The assumption most of us have is that they will make .ISO downloads (probably through a newer version of the Media Creation Tool) available within a few days of launch, maybe a week later at the most, so you're perfectly fine waiting if you want to until next month for the official release.

Since you're already running an early release of WIn10, you're obviously used to dealing with pre-release versions of Windows, so it's really up to you.

Yeah, I would just wait for the official ISO which should be quite close to the actual release date, I would think.

I have Win 11 up and running in the Beta channel, and win10 image backed up and I will leave the insider prog when it goes public on one of my two machines. I am not sure the best time, either just before Oct 5th or just after

Thanks for the replies.
I am currently in the Insider program, but on the release channel so only for Win 10.
I guess I will wait for the RTM ISO early October and do a fresh install at that point.
I wonder if I will have to leave the insider program or since that's for Win 10, will it automatically be cancelled?

The insider program for Win 10 will continue until the 21H2 for it is released. No idea what will happen at that point, but why take a chance on continuing to be part of the program. Just leave it before doing the clean install of Win 11.

This is pure speculation, but it may be possible to get am ISO of the release version from uupdump.net sooner than using the Media Creation Tool.

Download 22000.132 and either upgrade or install, it will update just fine, no need to join insider or whatever.

I'm in the beta channel running Windows 11, but my laptop's cpu (7th generation) does not meet the requirement although it does have TPM 2.0.
Going on the assumption Microsoft will not let me upgrade to the release build, if I did a clean install from ISO once they are available, how will I and others be able to manually install updates assuming Microsoft blocks them from Windows Update? Will it be worth the hassle or should I just plan to go back to Windows 10 on Oct. 5th?

From reading, it seems that Microsoft are not budging on min requirements when Win 11 goes live. Makes sense I think, security should be hardened, and with TPM built into the silicon on the die itself is a far more robust option than passwords/software based security options that are seeing more and more hacks.
I would go back to Win 10 on that machine (even though it has TPM I think the 4-core limitation is probably an important factor here - assume you have a 7700K or the likes)

I fall into the confused camp over this as the only part of my spare rig that doesn't meet W11 requirements is the i7 7 series CPU. From the insider build 22000.194 with KB5005635 installed today the only message I'm receiving is that 'Your PC does not meet the minimum hardware requirements recommended.....'. So whilst TPM2.0 may be rigorously enforced does that also extend to the CPU. The laptop has been running perfect since day one with 11.

From what I've read it's all a bit of a mystery so any input appreciated.

CPU being unsupported isn't really a mystery as they are not adding any more CPUs to the list that's pretty final.
The question that nobody can answer is what will actually happen to unsupported installs.
As it seems pretty clear unsupported won't get 11 via Windows update, will MS block unsupported hardware from other methods of install and if assuming unsupported Installs still work, will you get updates via Windows update, MS says not but may not actually enforce it or maybe updates can be installed manually as you can at the moment, we just don't know what may change between now and October the 5th.

This is pure speculation. If you buy into the concept that Win 11 is setting the stage for improved security then at some point down the line the enhanced security/features would crash on unsupported hardware. These enhancements should be blocked from from CU's and they should say that the PC will no longer get CU's, but maybe only Defender security updates. For other updates the PC should be clean installed with Win 10.

The update today was automatic - no intervention by myself apart from the reboot. Interesting although may all change after Oct 5 of course.

It may just be a play on words but MS stated 'recommended' in the message. So all go figure me on that one.
