Random misbehavior in Windows 11 Pro on my new Dell Pro Max Tower T2 FCT2250

Windows 11
I've been using the new PC about a month now. There are a couple random events that have spontaneously occurred in the settings. Both of these scenarios have occurred more than once, maybe three to five times, both before and after I reinstalled Windows ten days ago.

I use an external DAC to process the audio via USB and send the analog signal to my stereo system. It is set as my default audio device. There is also the internal Realtek soundcard which is listed as available devices under speakers and headphones, and I have disabled both. There is my Dell monitor which has speakers and it as also listed as an available audio device, which I have also disabled. Lastly, there is my Sony Bravia smart TV which has speakers and is connected to one of the mini DP ports on my Nvidia video card, which I've also disabled, since I only want to use the DAC as an audio device. There have been occasions where I went to play some audio on the PC and no sound came out, and I go to look at the speaker icon in the system tray and hover the mouse pointer over it to find that my audio device is now the Sony TV. I open Control Panel and go to the Manage Audio Devices window and see that the Sony TV which I disabled as an audio device is now shown as the default device. So I disable it, reset the Rega DAC as the default device, and all is well until the same thing happens again a few days or a week or two later. When it happens the TV is powered off, I only use it as a monitor while I'm on the computer occasionally. So this random reset is not do to the TV coming online.

The other thing is that I am just doing some things on the computer and suddenly the desktop display shrinks for a moment and then resizes to normal. I ignore it until later when I cannot find the mouse pointer, and then I realize that it has wandered off the right side of the screen, and I check my display settings, which I have set to duplicate these displays, and find that the setting has changed to extend these displays. So I change it back to duplicate, and my mouse pointer no longer wanders off the right edge of the screen. But yesterday when it happened Windows also changed the screen resolution when it changed the display setting for multiple displays, and when I reset it to duplicate these displays the icons and desktop look blew up to become all blurry and ugly. I didn't realize the screen resolution had changed until I called Dell Support and the agent figured it out for me. So now when it happens again I will have to change the settings for multiple displays and for screen resolution.

What I want to know is: 1. Why do these two random resets keep happening (the display reset happens while I am using the computer, the audio device reset may be happening when I restart the computer, or during regular use, I can't recall for sure)? 2. What can I do to troubleshoot and correct these annoyances so they don't keep recurring? I can provide more details about my system if it will be helpful, just ask.

On Sunday after a restart another thing happened, which was my default apps for all browser file extensions and image files had been reset from Firefox to Edge, and from Irfanview to Photos. It was a bother to have to go reset all those file types to my default app of choice. So far it has only happened once. I hope it doesn't become a repeat offender like the previously described Windows misbehaviors.

Hi there.

Only thing I can suggest atm, is turning off fast startup.
  • Open Control Panel.
  • Select Hardware and Sound.
  • Click Power Options.
  • On the left, choose Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Under Shutdown settings, untick > Turn on fast startup.
  • Click Save changes.

Fast Startup might be causing Windows to forget default audio devices, re‑enable disabled devices, and reset display behaviour?
Turning it off should force Windows to perform a full, clean boot each time.

Thanks, I just did what you suggested and will hope that it helps. Peace...

Hi Ferrara. I hopeit does help. If nothing else, it should enable a proper scan of peripherals, because of the clean boot. Fingers crossed 🤞
