I like to do things the simple way. :-)
I always use the Macrium program from within Windows, to make my backups.
I store them on another internal storage drive.

Then I always use the Macrium bootable Rescue Media to do my restores from outside Windows.
I don't want the backup I'm restoring from, to even "touch" the current Windows install.

Lots of backup tools are not Chinese.

The main Chinese tools are perfectly reputable.

You have no evidence to suggest tools like AOMEI, Hasleo, Easeus are dodgy.

If you are so prejudiced and want to use non Chinese tools, loads of options e.g. Paragon (German), Veeam (US), Casper (US) native Windows FFU etc.

Google is still your friend.

Anyway, you can still download and use free version of Macrium Reflect.

But one day Reflect Free may stop working in a new version of Windows, and the paid-for version might price itself out of the market. The question was asked 'is there any other way, preferably one that's free and not Chinese?' It's good to know that we do have other options.

Disk2vhd is actually as easy a way to back up as Macrium (doesn't do incrementals/differentials though). It uses VSS for backing up within Windows, and as it can also be run from the command line you could probably schedule backups!

The restore was a little more complex, needing some command line stuff to prepare before using Partition wizard, and a final command to build the BCD (much the same process as Reflect's 'Fix Windows boot problems'). Partition Wizard itself was quite straight forward to use.

I'm just downloading the portable version of Partition Wizard 12 to see if that too is up to the job.....

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. That's why I bought version 8.1 (lifetime license, not subscription), during one of their "sales".
Cause you're 100% right... they ARE gonna price themselves out of the market.

Once you buy yourself a sailboat... then you're gonna want a yacht... etc.
And I think they already all HAVE their sailboats. :D

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Let's note that that's not a criticism of the portable. The portable behaves exactly like the installed version, so if the portable free version won't work in PE and RE, neither will the installed.

I use at least 80 of them at various times, even if only once a month. Any app that is a beta / alpha / pre-release I use first, and if that breaks I revert to using the regular release of.

Some of those are there for JIC moments, though lol.

Lol. Yeah, Kitty is a native x64 build of PuTTy, and Suction is an app I bought long time ago to easily pull files from multiple sub directories up one or more levels, when I redid my file structure and organization.
