  • Staff
Start_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to remove the Recommended section from the Start Menu for specific users or all users in Windows 11.

The Start menu in Windows 11 is comprised of three sections: Pinned, All apps, and Recommended.

The Recommended section on the Start menu shows a list of your recently added apps, recently opened items, and websites.

 This will only work for Windows 11 Education (aka: "Windows 11 SE") and Enterprise editions.

You must be signed in as an administrator to remove the Recommended section from the Start Menu.

Contents

  • Option One: Remove Recommended Section from Start Menu for All or Specific Users in Local Group Policy Editor
  • Option Two: Remove Recommended Section from Start Menu for All Users using REG file

It may be due to some 3rd party tweak conflict... but Option 2 (reg patch) is not working for me.
Hello mate,

Could be this below.

Agreed. Since there's already a policy for this, it should be made available to all editions. Especially since it's highly requested.

I still can't believe I thought restarting twice would make a difference. :D

I didn't "take" a nap... I fell asleep in the computer chair while watching Hogan's Heroes.
I blame the weather. Yesterday and today... cold, rainy, windy.
Tripped up by the nap gods. :-)

It's a bit odd how they've restricted this tweak to Windows 11 Education. 🤔

EDU & ProEDU SKU's. I doubt most users have legitimate access to SE anyway.
You're right.
I didn't even know about it until I read this thread. :-)

It's a bit odd how they've restricted this tweak to Windows 11 Education. 🤔
Yep - 10,000 people have fed back they want this crap removed.

Why on earth should students be allowed to do this but not anybody else.

I could understand if it was restricted to Home but not Pro users.

As an aside, I though Enterprise users do not get the crappy recommended section as well?

What floors me is...
Why on earth would they recommend that I revisit, a completely insignificant item, that has already been sent to the Recycle Bin!?!?!?
A complete waste of time, space and resources, if you ask me!

Hi,
Yeah 11 edu good one hehe

Personally I just use explorer patcher just for start menu now f'it all although it's never shown anything in the recommended section the setting has worked on my laptop but just got tiered of clicking past the bs start menu screen to get to all all apps.

Explorer to I guess just for the 11 classic address bar instead of default I haven't noticed any difference though there :/

I have Windows 11 Enterprise (build 22621) on my work laptop, and the registry key method worked! Even though the group policy shows the same note about the setting only being supported on SE. It required a reboot, but the recommended section is completely gone now. So don't get discouraged by the note that it only works on Windows 11 SE, try it and you might be in luck.

If you're still interested in getting that section out of your face, and the SE fix doesn't work for you, you might try Power Start Menu from the MS Store. Lots of easy settings on one settings page. I use it to remove the Recommended section and the Search bar, which is another silly waste of space, since if you open Start without a Search bar and start typing, you get the same search behavior.

Unlike many here, I use the Start menu many times a day for one-click access to my most-used programs and folders.

Does Power Start Menu work with a local account?

I can't purchase anything from the Microsoft store without logging into it and I know from past experience that once I log in to anything Microsoft windows is like Gollum with his precious and my info is stashed away and difficult to purge.

Does Power Start Menu work with a local account?
Absolutely. I never log in with MS. My Local Account suits me fine. I don't use OneDrive on either of my office machines, and the only other thing that might depend on an active MS login is Copilot, which I play with from time to time to see just how stupid it is, and so far, despite MS claims to the contrary, it's working just fine on my Local Account logins.

@Edwin : That's incorrect. Sorry, but it is.
