Personalization Remove Shortcut Arrow Icon in Windows 11

  • Staff
Shortcut_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to remove the shortcut arrow overlay on all shortcut icons for all users in Windows 11.

A shortcut is a link to an item (such as a file, folder, or app) on your PC. You can create shortcuts and then place them in a convenient location, such as on the desktop, so you can easily access the item that the shortcut links to. Shortcut files (.lnk) can be distinguished from the source target by the arrow that appears overlayed on the shortcut's icon.

You must be signed in as an administrator to remove or restore the shortcut arrow icon.

Contents

OPTION ONE

Remove Shortcut Arrow Icon

1 Click/tap on the Download button below to download the ZIP file below.

Remove_shortcut_arrow._icon.zip

2 Save the .zip file to your desktop.

3 Unblock the .zip file.

4 Open the .zip file, and extract (drag and drop) the Remove_shortcut_arrow_icon.reg and blank.ico files to your desktop.

(Content of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons]
"29"="C:\\Windows\\blank.ico"

5 Copy/Move the blank.ico file into the C:\Windows folder, and click/tap on Continue when prompted to approve. (see screenshots below)

The blank.ico file is a 24x24 pixel transparent icon.

blank.ico-1.png
blank.ico-2.png

6 Double click/tap on the Remove_shortcut_arrow_icon.reg file to merge it.

7 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

8 Either restart the explorer process, sign out and sign in, or restart the computer to apply.

9 You can now delete any remaining files on your desktop if you like.

OPTION TWO

Restore Shortcut Arrow Icon

This is the default setting.

1 Click/tap on the Download button below to download the REG file below.

Restore_default_shortcut_arrow_icon.reg

(Content of REG file for reference)
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Application.Reference]
"IsShortcut"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\IE.AssocFile.URL]
"IsShortcut"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\IE.AssocFile.WEBSITE]
"IsShortcut"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut]
"IsShortcut"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]
"IsShortcut"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Microsoft.Website]
"IsShortcut"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile]
"IsShortcut"=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons]
"29"=-

2 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

4 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

5 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

6 Open the C:\Windows folder, delete the blank.ico file, and click/tap on Continue when prompted to approve. (see screenshot below)

Delete_blank.ico.png

7 Either restart the explorer process, sign out and sign in, or restart the computer to apply.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Is it a system requirement that the 'blank.ico' file MUST be in 'C:\Windows'?
OR can I place it in another folder, with the appropriate edit to the .reg file?

Hello mate, :-)

Sure you can save the "blank.ico" file where you like so long as you update the location in the registry as well. It does need to be a location that all users have at least read access rights to, or the icon may not work for them.

Purely FYI. Ran this a couple of times and had to then delete and do again. The reg file kept on creating the registry key in
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons - even though the \WOW6432Node\ sub-key is not in the script. Consequently the shortcut arrow remained

Registry entry easily and simply remedied manually, and works a treat, but just an interesting phenomena.

I have all my default reg tweaks merged into one .reg file...,

... the only one I may have to install manually is the 'Turn Off Displays', in case MS borks the nircmd.exe!

@Brink

Here... I added "classic" and classic2 (larger), shortcut arrow and it's reg patch, to your .zip file.
Added README.txt also.
So the choices are: blank, classic, classic2 or default
Works on W11 23H2.

Actual size (classic), on my 2560x1600 screen...

Image1.png

Here's the README that's in the ZIP file...

1. Drop the blank.ico and classic.ico and classic2.ico files in the C:\Windows folder.
2. Use the appropriate registry patch for whatever icon type you want to use.
3. Either restart the explorer process, sign out and sign in, or restart the computer to apply.

blank = no shortcut arrow
classic = small shortcut arrow
classic2 = large shortcut arrow

default = Win 11 default arrow

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
I think I made a bad mistake and need some handholding.
I used your tweak for Windows 10, which worked fine for me on Windows 10, on my new Windows 11 machine. Left me with arrows, albeit little tiny ones. I went back and deleted the new registry keys that your Windows 10 hack make, and then applied your new hack for Windows 11. I still have lots of little tiny arrows.

Thanks for any help.

Hello Keith, and welcome. :alien:

Just to confirm, did you restart the explorer process, sign out and sign in, or restart the computer afterwards to apply?

If yes, please go ahead and post a screenshot showing these little arrows to make sure they're not for something else.

Not sure what I did wrong. Went back and reinserted the contents of the .reg file, and copied the blank.ico over the previous one and rebooted. Now the arrows are gone. I should have looked more closely as I did this to figure out what I did wrong the first. Time Thanks!
