Edit ~~~ Anyway, for anyone who might be interested, during the setup process the installer explicitly says that BitLocker will be suspended, so there is no need to do it manually. I have a screenshot, though it is in Italian

When performing an in place upgrade repair it may be performed to:

a) fix problems with an existing installation
b) upgrade to another version of Windows

For option b please consider adding the free space requirement to the tutorial: 20 GB

Hello mate,

This tutorial is designed more for option a to repair the same version without losing anything.

Option b would be more the same as an upgrade install below instead, but I'll add the free space warning now to be safe.

I am very familiar with in-place upgrades in Win 10. However this is the first I have tried on Win 11. On a Surface Pro 7 I am not being allowed to choose to keep everything, getting an error message:

...your files and apps can't be kept because windows might be installed in an unsupported directory...

I'm not sure what is causing this. Is there a fix or workaround?

Before the in place upgrade repair is performed please detach the cable or remove the non-windows drive.

Comment into this thread as to whether this step does or does not fix the error message.

Usual reaaon is your iso is an earlier major build number than what is on pc.

OS checks are a seperate issue, upgrading from Windows 7 is an unsupported upgrade path. You will only be allowed to keep user files, plus the upgrade will not get a digital licence. To keep installed apps and be activated through a digital licence you'd need to upgrade to Windows 10 first. The same may well apply to upgrading Windows 8, but I do not have a 64-bit W8 machine I can test that on.

You can clean install W11 and still enter a valid qualifying W8 key -- use enter product number rather than "activate over the internet" option. You don't need to have an activated version of any of these OS's actually installed on a system.

The old Technet keys are still working (or they were last week) if you have any of those still lying around.

The keys need to come from a qualifying version of W7/W8/W8.1 and must be equivalent to full retail (not from "pre-installed" OEM versions of these OS's if those were installed when you got the machine), and must be for the same thing - e.g PRO to PRO (you can't go from HOME to PRO).or Enterprise to any W10 . W11. W7 Ultimate counts the same as W7 pro. If this fails on your system a minimal install of W10 will work and then just upgrade to W11.

Thanks all. It appears to be because I had unencrypted my disk. I activated Bitlocker again and when it completed encrypting the in-place reinstall worked as expected.

In a recent thread an OP had upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and had problems with Windows 11.
It was the second day after the upgrade.
They performed an in place upgrade repair.
The repair did not fix the Windows 11 problems.
They decided to go back to Windows 10 and were unable to go back as the Windows.old was deleted.

(They fortunately had created a backup image that could be restored)

What to expect when doing a repair install of Windows 10:

System Protection will be reset to the default of being turned off. It is recommended to turn on system protection after the repair install has finished to have restore points.
You will lose any custom fonts.
You will lose any customized system icons.
You may need to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection.
You will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build you have used for the repair install.
Windows.old will be created.
You will need to redo any language downloads including the display language if you changed that.

It is indeed normal for the previous windows in Windows.old (only available up to 10 days since upgrade by default) to be replaced by the current Windows whenever you perform an upgrade.

There may be some tutorial readers that view:

"If you are having problems with Windows 11 on your PC and the usual solutions will not fix Windows 11, you can do a repair install of Windows 11 by performing an in-place upgrade without losing anything."

and not be aware that they could lose the ability to go back to Windows 10.

If the OP had modified the go back period beyond 10 days they are still at risk to lose the ability to go back to Windows 10.
Consider: "do not perform an in place upgrade repair during the duration of the go back period"

I don't want to tell not to since it's up to them, but a warning is there to let them know the previous Windows will get replaced if they do.

Of course, keeping updated system images should always be the golden rule.

A custom install in comparison to an in place upgrade repair may maintain the windows.old.
Whether this does or does not allow the return to Windows 10 i've not tested.

Right my case. after upgrade to Windows 11 from 10.
2nd day when login, pop-up message some *.dll missing (account related). I was running this way days. really felt annoying. didn't know what to do.
Later, a repair install cleaned up the problem. its drawback is, repair install took very long time. on my laptop about 3-4 hrs.
