Replacing CPU fan and heat sink: Thermal paste/pad question.

Well if you happen to have or are planning to get an Intel 12th or 13th gen desktop CPU there's even more to the story, as the iLM (integrated loading mechanism) of these specific CPUs has a pressure problem causing the IHS (integrated heat spreader) of the CPU to be bent slighly inwards, or curved concavely. That's why, for these specific CPUs, the viscosity of the thermal paste is a lot more important than one might expect, as this customer review on Amazon Canada points out correctly:

P.S., Like the Thermalright TF7 paste, Arctic MX-6 paste also has a higher viscosity [than e.g. Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut paste]. The higher viscosity also makes it suitable for direct die applications such as GPUs.

There are some Thermal Pads that actually work well, the Honeywell PTM7950 which is what Lenovo uses for their gaming notebooks. There is also the Gelid HeatPhase Ultra. Atleast it solves the pump out problem that thermal pastes have in some situations.

@Almighty1 I don't think I'm going to face that problem at all. The surfaces of both are flat, and the Kryonaut, with the pea-sized squirt in the center, doesn't seem to have any reports of pump-out.

That's why I said in "some" situations. I have the pump out issue with my notebook even though it's flat and that is with the Kryonaut, it worked fine initially for a month and then high temps again as Kryonaut will dry out when the temp is 80C or higher and my notebook can go from 70C to 100C going into thermal throttling. Same issue with the SYY-157. It's even mentioned in this thread:

So whether it happens or not, only you will know as applying thermal paste is like an experiment and then either it works long term or it doesn't. Can't tell until it happens.

I've been more of an AMD guy the past few years. Last 3 system builds for my family have all been AMD. Son has 3800x, wife has 5600x and i have a 5900x.

Yes, pump-out can still happen over time even if the surfaces are completely flat, and, when it does, it can take up to 4 months or sometimes longer before it starts to become truly noticeable. (This gradual, potential effect is caused mainly by the fact that metal expands when it heats up and contracts when it cools down, also in addition to the fact that this expansion/contraction happens repetitively as a result of merely using the computer.)

From what I have seen, Noctua NT-H2 paste also tends to have this potential problem, no matter the fact that it is still very high among the best (non liquid metal) pastes for both performance and aiming toward minimal effort in maintenance. Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut paste has this potential problem too, but is often recommended over the Noctua NT-H2 paste only for the fact that the latter is often more expensive, which, like you could expect, gets parroted around on the internet even during those moments when it factually is not.
