Personalization Reset and Re-register Windows Spotlight in Windows 11

Windows_Spotlight-new_header.webp

This tutorial will show you how to reset and re-register Windows Spotlight for your account in Windows 11.

In Windows 11, you can have Windows Spotlight as a theme and display different background images on your desktop and lock screen, and occasionally offers suggestions on the lock screen.

If Windows Spotlights stops working and/or stops changing the background image, you can reset and re-register Windows Spotlight to fix it.

Windows Spotlight will not work while connected to a metered network (ethernet or wireless), or in Battery Saver mode.

Windows Spotlight requires Background Apps to be turned on.

Country or region and Device setup region must be the same for Spotlight to work.

Sometimes it may take 24 to 48 hours after resetting for Windows Spotlight to sync again.

Another option is to use the Windows spotlight, dynamic images theme.

Here's How:

1 Change your desktop background to something other than Windows Spotlight. (see screenshot below)

This step is only available in Windows 11 build 22557 and higher.

It took many many tries over a few days to solve my Windows Spotlight not working on the lock screen. Finally got it working. Brink's bat file did not work until I also turmed off Microsoft Edge Settings option for startup boost and then logged and back in so that edge would not be running when I ran the bat file. The method for launching the bat file was to open an adminstrator command prompt and use the command line to launch the bat file. Not sure if that makes any difference other than you can see if there are any errors doing it that way. I also had repaired Microsoft Edge a little earlier. At least it works now! My system has never run better.
Thank you for your feedback. :shawn:

Another option may be to boot into Safe Mode, then perform the steps in the tutorial to not have to worry about anything interfering with the BAT.

Well thank-you @Brink! Over the last seven days I have tried everything in this thread, and lots more from other places, to get Spotlight to work as it did before, (I still do not know what made it stop working in the first place). I have no other 3rd party programs, that I can think of, that may have caused this problem - I don't put that much on this machine just for that reason.

I was about on the "brink" 🤣 lol, of giving up. Then I thought of running your "Reset_and_re-register_Windows_Spotlight" bat file in "Safe Mode" as you suggested in my quote here, of your reply early on in this thread. Sure enough - that was the trick. Something, I do not know what, was/is, running in the background blocking that bat file from executing correctly.

Anyway, I just thought I would let you know so you could tell others to be sure to try running that bat file in Safe Mode if it does not work running it normal mode. Also, to be sure they follow your instructions to unblock that zip file before extracting the file.

The Spotlight thing is no big deal for me, and I could easily live without it, but it was annoying that it just stopped working, very annoying, lol.

Hello, :alien:

Sometimes it can take up to 48 hours after resetting and re-registering Spotlight for it to work again.

If it's still not working properly afterwards, then another option is to use the Windows spotlight, dynamic images theme or this theme below:

How to Force Windows Spotlight to Fetch New Backgrounds Immediately

1. Advance your Windows system date 7 days forward.
2. Check your system tray and wait until OneDrive finishes syncing.
3. Once syncing is complete, you should see 4 new Spotlight background images appear on your desktop.

Important Note:
This method modifies approximately 30–50 timestamps in your Windows registry.

I am not certain whether restoring a registry backup will fully correct all of the advanced timestamps. However, here is the method I use to reset all timestamps back to the current date:

1. Download a free registry tool that includes a Find and Replace function.
2. In that tool, perform a replacement.

For example:

Assuming you are performing this on 2025-10-30

• Find: 2025-11-02
• Replace with: 2025-10

Hello, and welcome to the forum. :alien:

That's ok. After running it in Safe Mode, run it again in normal mode (if able) so it can do the -apppackage commands.

its funny you mention dynamic themes. With that app, i am getting an error from the app in which background tasks are not allowed. i went through this thread and others to enable background tasks, but cant seem to enable it. dynamic themes still gives the error. I believe because of this error, my image didn't change today

What about the built-in spotlight theme?

That certainly is not a default setting. You can check all the options below to see if it may help to enable background apps.

ok. after digging through the enable / disable background apps, i had to enable background apps for all users. I made the approrpriate reg change and it now appears to work. Somehow it got disabled. Maybe through one of the windows updates. Anyhow, i appear to be good now.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. :alien:

Another option is to use the Windows spotlight, dynamic images theme.
