Apps Reset and Restore Default Apps for File Types in Windows 11

  • Staff
Default_app_banner.png

A default app is the program that Windows has assigned to open a file or link type with by default when you open it.

Default apps you choose will only apply to your account and will not affect other accounts on the PC.

This tutorial will show you how to reset and restore the default app association of a file type for your account in Windows 11.

This can be helpful when a file type opens with the wrong default app.

The default app selected by a user for a file type is stored in the UserChoice key in the registry below.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\<file type>\UserChoice

Contents

  • Option One: Reset All Default Apps to Microsoft Recommended App Defaults
  • Option Two: Reset and Restore Specific File Type Associations to Default

Option One

Reset All Default Apps to Microsoft Recommended App Defaults

This option will reset and restore the default apps for all file types for the current user.

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Apps on the left side, and click/tap on Default apps on the right side. (see screenshot below)

Open Default apps settings

Reset_all_default_apps-1.png

3 Click/tap on the Reset button for Reset all default apps on the right side. (see screenshot below)

Reset_all_default_apps-2.png

4 Click/tap on OK to confirm. (see screenshot below)

Reset_all_default_apps-3.png

5 You will see check mark to the right of Reset all default apps to indicate when the reset has finished. (see screenshot below)

Reset_all_default_apps-4.png

6 You can now close Settings if you like.

Option Two

Reset and Restore Specific File Type Associations to Default

1 Click/tap on the file type link in the table below you would like to restore the default app associations of to download its REG file.

2 Save the REG file to your desktop.

3 Double click/tap on the downloaded REG file to merge it.

4 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

If the downloaded .reg file is not able to Merge, then double check in Default Apps to make sure the .reg file type has it current default app set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the .reg file again.

5 Either restart the explorer process. sign out and sign in, or restart the computer to apply.

6 You can now delete the downloaded REG file if you like.

The list of default file types available to download in the table below is just a start for now, and is a work in progress. I will constantly be adding more to the list, but if you need one that is not yet listed, then please post a request for it. I'll be happy to get it added to the list.

Hello, I am having a small issue with Windows 11 that might be related to this post.

When I right click a file and click on "Compress to ZIP file" it asks me how I want to open my file. It does not compress the file like it used to. I use this feature quite a lot and have never had a problem with it until today.

Step 1:

Step 2:

System Specs
Version: 21H2
OS build: 22000.739

I have already tried an automatic PC repair and restored my PC to the last restore point. The issue still persists.
I have also tried options 1 and 2 posted above to reset the default apps. Windows File explorer has always remained the default app and currently is.

Let me know if you need any more information. Thank you.

Hello Jason, and welcome. :)

As a test, download and merge the REG file below to see if it may fix this for you. It will restore all of the default registry entries for ZIP that should also include this context menu item.

Download

Hello Jason, and welcome. :)

As a test, download and merge the REG file below to see if it may fix this for you. It will restore all of the default registry entries for ZIP that should also include this context menu item.

Thank you for the quick reply. I have downloaded and tried to run the .reg file but ran into another issue.

I have no other windows open except for this one. I will keep trying and let you know if I get pass this.

You'll need to be signed in as an administrator to be able to successfully merge the REG file.

Yes, currently I am signed in as admin, but maybe that is part of the issue 🤔

I just tested the REG on a different system. It's not an issue on your fault. One of the keys required changing permissions for the REG file to change it, so why the error. It can safely be ignored.

Does the compress context menu work for you now?

Unforchantly, it does not work after. I might just look into soft resetting my PC since I am having a few other issues with programs not opening but I appreciate the help.

A repair install would be a good option to try and fix it without losing anything.
