Apps Reset and Restore Default Apps for File Types in Windows 11

  • Staff
Default_app_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to reset and restore the default app association of a file type for your account in Windows 11.

A default app is the program that Windows has assigned to open a file or link type with by default when you open it.

Default apps you choose will only apply to your account and will not affect other accounts on the PC.

This can be helpful when a file type opens with the wrong default app.

The default app selected by a user for a file type is stored in the UserChoice key in the registry below for that specific account.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\<file type>\UserChoice

Contents

  • Option One: Reset All Default Apps to Microsoft Recommended App Defaults
  • Option Two: Reset and Restore Specific File Type Associations to Default

Option One

Reset All Default Apps to Microsoft Recommended App Defaults

This option will reset and restore the default apps for all file types for the current user.

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Apps on the left side, and click/tap on Default apps on the right side. (see screenshot below)

Reset_all_default_apps-1.png

3 Click/tap on the Reset button for Reset all default apps on the right side. (see screenshot below)

Reset_all_default_apps-2.png

4 Click/tap on OK to confirm. (see screenshot below)

Reset_all_default_apps-3.png

5 You will see check mark to the right of Reset all default apps to indicate when the reset has finished. (see screenshot below)

Reset_all_default_apps-4.png

6 You can now close Settings if you like.

Option Two

Reset and Restore Specific File Type Associations to Default

1 Click/tap on the file type link in the table below you would like to restore the default app associations of to download its REG file.

The reg option in the table will be a BAT file instead of REG file.

2 Save the REG file to your desktop.

3 Double click/tap on the downloaded REG file to merge it.

4 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

If the downloaded .reg file is not able to Merge, then double check in Default Apps to make sure the .reg file type has it current default app set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the .reg file again.

5 Either restart the explorer process. sign out and sign in, or restart the computer to apply.

6 You can now delete the downloaded REG file if you like.

The list of default file types available to download in the table below is just a start for now, and is a work in progress. I will constantly be adding more to the list, but if you need one that is not yet listed, then please post a request for it. I'll be happy to get it added to the list.

Hey , happy new year.

I have little problems with some file types icons e.g with .txt and .inf.
Generally i use filetypesman to change them. I search for the cause of the issue.
I see 2 things and i dont know if they are OK :
1) All the versions of imageres.dll at my system not contain icons
2) The .txt hash in registry is different that it is at tenforums file (downloaded). Mine is OIdx6Ti7qLU= , tenforums is veSVYadOH6E=
Could anyone tell me if they are OK ?
Finally, could you give the .inf file for Win11 , if its different than tenforums ?
Thanks.

Hello mate, and Happy New Year to you as well. :alien:

1) Correct. Not all will contain icons.

2) The hash will be different per system, but they'll still work.

3) inf now added to option two for you.

Usually, they're the same as the default app.

You can search for the DefaultIcon subkey for file extensions listed in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT to see the icon path.

I cant understand that.

1) The path shows imageres.dll , but its empty. Where is the specified imageres.dll ?
2) The icon that i configure is different and its correct (C:\Users\t******\Pictures\Εικονίδια\Info.ico)
and it showed correct also
3) The path at registry for C:\Users\t******\Pictures\Εικονίδια\Info.ico is that.
But when the icon of .inf files autochanged , its the same there. When i reloaded with filetypesman then it shows the correct (Info.ico)

The icon used for a file type is based on its default app, but it can be changed like below.

The imageres.dll file path is in your screenshot as %SystemRoot%\System32\imageres.dll which is C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll

The tutorial below will show you how to extract and save the ICO file if that's what you wanted.

So , my first problem was the Resousce Hacker app. It not shows icons of imagere.dll.
I try it with Green fish editor pro and the icons appeared!
Btw while i had problems with "filetypesman" app i found at internet the "types" app. It look work OK for know.
Also as i check at registry it works with different way than filetypesman (it creates a key "types" with all user's changes inside).
Another problem is that when you take an update of windows e.g 23H2 , most or all icons goes to default.

So i asked for the path at registry to find a way to backup all file types icons by exporting the keys in one file.

Anyway we know some new things :
1) Imageres.dll at C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll must contain icons.
2) "Resource hackers" app didnt show the icons of imageres.dll.
3) "Types" app work with other way than "filetypesman".

So for know its solved.

Thanks !!!!!!! :thumbsup::party:

Hi, thanks for the welcome!
All of these worked great expect for .rar & .7z. The reg file did reset the file association, however, when looking at the 'choose defaults by file type' menu in settings, .rar & .7z have no file association and when I click to set a default app, Explorer isn't present in the list of options. Any ideas on how I can solve this issue? Explorer should definitely be on that list as I'm on build 22631.3296 and of course, the other file associations (such as .tar.gz) are working fine with explorer.

Odd. Is Windows Explorer listed instead?

If not, then you can see if the REG file below may fix it for you.

Code:
