System Reset Graphics Preferences for Apps and Games to Default in Windows 11

This tutorial will show you how to reset graphics performance preferences for apps and games back to default settings for your account in Windows 11.

Resetting your graphics preferences will reset the Optimizations for windowed games, Auto HDR, Variable refresh rate, and GPU preference settings for apps and games back to default.

After you reset graphics preferences to default, you will need to restart (if open) any affected app or game to see the changes applied.

Option One

Reset Graphics Preferences for Specific Apps and Games to Default in Settings


This option only affects the GPU Preference and Optimizations for windowed games settings for a specific app or game.


1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on System on the left side, and click/tap on Display on the right side. (see screenshot below)

3 Click/tap on Graphics under "Related settings" on the right side. (see screenshot below)

4 Under "Custom settings for applications", click/tap on the app (ex: "Movies & TV") you want to reset graphics preferences for to expand it open. (see screenshot below step 5)

5 Click/tap on the Reset button. (see screenshot below)

If the Reset button is grayed out, then the app is already using default settings.

6 When finished, you can close Settings if you like.




Option Two

Reset Graphics Preferences for All Apps and Games to Default using REG file


1 Click/tap on the Download button below to download the REG file below.

Reset_all_graphics_preferences_for_apps_and_games_to_default_for_current_user.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX]

2 Save the REG file to your desktop.

3 Double click/tap on the downloaded REG file to merge it.

4 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

5 You can now delete the downloaded REG file if you like.
