Hello everyone,

I have a corrupted VM which I previously backed up using Acronis True Image. Would anyone happen to have any idea(s) on how to restore a VM, particularly an .tibx (Acronis) backup file? I hate to lose it because it is a highly modified install of Windows 11 26H2 (b 26300.9711).

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Virtual beer will be on me.

Kind regards,

tecknot

Hello,

I figured it out. I went into Acronis, made a copy of my .vhdx file and pasted into a folder on my C:. I then created a new VM in Hyper-V. In this instance, I picked "Use an existing virtual hard disk" and the VM ran after connecting in Hyper-V.

New VM using existing VHDx.webp

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Initially I thought you asked how to restore a backup in Acronis. If I understood correctly, the original virtual disk had an issue and you deleted the file. Then you restored from backup and you asked how to use it in a new virtual machine. I would just restore the backup replacing the original VHDX file. This way there wouldn't be the need to create a new virtual machine. I might be wrong though, I have used Hyper-V only a couple of times. I mostly use VMWare Workstation and VirtualBox. As far as I know, if you replace an existing virtual disk with another of the same name, the virtual machine should boot normally using the replacement. If you wanted to do it like it was a real machine, you should boot with Acronis Home Rescue ISO and connect the external disk containing the backup. You should restore the backup on the virtual disk replacing all contents, like you would restore to a physical disk.

Hi spapakons,

Yeah, you got it right. I was intending to restore the VM replacing the old defunct VM.

I did exactly what you described in restoring the .vhdx file with Acronis just as you would a real machine. However, I got error after error trying to run the 'restored' VM. So, I tried a number of things until the simple method of copying the .vhdx file came to mind since I knew Hyper-V has the option of using an existing .vhdx. It was just a desperate shot in the dark.

Kind regards,

tecknot

Probably there is some type of signature or checksum that didn't match and made the restored disk unbootable due to Secure Boot. Once you replaced the disk it worked because a new signature was created matching the new disk.

Probably there is some type of signature or checksum that didn't match and made the restored disk unbootable due to Secure Boot. Once you replaced the disk it worked because a new signature was created matching the new disk.

Hi spapakons,

Would this command line have cured it:

Set-VHD “D:\VM\maindisk.avhdx” –ParentPath “D:\VM\maindisk.vhdx” -ignoreidmismatch ?

Kind regards,

tecknot

Hi spapakons,

It has worked on a couple of errors, but I don't recall which off the top of my head.

Kind regards,
