Solved Reverse mbr2gpt on used SSD

I had a 1Tb sata ssd that I was using to boot to my Windows 11 Pro. I had previously used it in Windows 10 and when I upgraded to Win 11 I used mbr2gpt. I have since upgraded to a 2Tb Samsung EVO Pro and now I want to use this old ssd as a boot disk for my wife's Win 10 Pro so I can upgrade her PC to Win 11.

Her current C: drive is mbr and I want to keep it as a backup if the move to Win 11 fails. However, the ssd from my system apparently has my system's gpt info on it as I can't Macrium her C: drive to the ssd and have the PC boot after changing her BIOS to UEFI.

Is there any way of formatting the ssd to remove the gpt info and make it mbr again? I checked the web and can't find anything about reversing the procedure.

If you want to save the data on the SSD, use Option 1.

    Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 15 years?
Plan B: convert your wife's boot drive to GPT using the mbr2gpt utility.

It's drastic enough that you'd want a backup of the drive, first.

Are the two computers similar? Why Win 10 was installed as Legacy - MBR on a computer has UEFI BIOS?
Are the two computers same family (Intel or AMD)?

There are two ways to convert your wife drive to UEFI - GPT from Legacy - MBR.
  • As bobkn suggested, so do I, use mbr2gpt on her drive and then upgrade to Win 11.
  • Your old SSD should boot on her computer and activated if it is same type (Home or Pro). Then you have to copy all her data to the SSD. Try to set Secure boot to off on BIOS
