So I read somewhere in here that Windows is now updating versions during a clean install of Windows?

So for example; If I am installing with the ISO for -
Windows 11 Pro 24H2 Build: 26100.1742
I could end up with -
Windows 11 Pro 24H2 Build: 26100.2033

If this is true, it would be great if Rufus could disable updates during install

I use backup software. I haven't reinstalled in a while.
Back when I did... I'd always unhook the internet, and all the other drives, before installing.

The last time I installed, was Windows 10 in May 2020.
In June 2021, I did an In-Place Upgrade from Win 10 to Win 11 Insiders.
In Oct 2021... I deleted all that, and did another In-Place from Win 10 to Win 11 (non-Insider).

<-------- That brings us to the present.

Sure, so you don't remember?

My understanding is that disconnecting the internet now causes complications unless you do a local account install.
Howevvvva; I recently poled a studio audience and apparently I have zero idea about what I am referring to.

Well... I installed Win 10 on a local account... and all the In-Place Upgrades, just brought the local account along for the ride.

That's one of the reasons I like In-Place Upgrades.

Surely you must of accumulated a lot of unnecessary or obsolete system files from between 2020 and 2024?

Surely you must of accumulated a lot of unnecessary or obsolete system files from between 2020 and 2024?

No. I keep things pretty clean, before and after every backup or restore.
No dust bunnies in MY Windows. :D

Edit: I'm OCD and have a lot of time on my hands. My Windows is clean.

There have been a few tweak conflicts over the years. The hardest one for me was when I used Winaero in Win 10 to disable Action Center. That tweak worked fine.

But when I In-Placed to Win 11... that tweak came with. It broke the Win 11 calendar. LOL
That took about 3 days to figure out. :-)

Yes. I tried importing Winaero tweaks from Win 10 back into Winaero in Win 11 and it wasn’t pretty.
Even the one bout of food poisoning I had in my lifetime was more attractive.

I'd guess I only have about 10-15 Winaero tweaks.
The only real problem was when the Win 10 Action Center tweak, butted heads with Win 11 Notifications, and killed the Win 11 calendar. :D

I do a clean install of Windows an absolute minimum of once a day. On some days it may be 10 times or more. No, I am not insane, at least not that I know of, but I do this for testing purposes trying to develop scripts and programs to automate procedures. I have NEVER once seen it upgrade the build on me during installation, so I don't believe this to be something that happens unless there is some odd circumstance that I am not aware of.

My testing includes installations where I sign into a Microsoft account, but more typically I create a local user account.

Also, 100% of my testing is done with Pro edition. I probably install the Home edition less than once every 6 months.

One thing that I do is to disable automatic updates until I am done configuring the system. For Windows updates I just delay updates for one week and when doner configuring the system I resume updates. To prevent Microsoft Store update I apply the registry setting, again, reversing this after system configuration is done:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsStore]
"AutoDownload"=dword:00000002

Before computers, there was Monopoly (and playing cards)

I've almost always done clean installs since the days of Win95. In the early days I made a partition on the same hard drive to keep files, later on I got an external.
I have never done a clean install even before Windows 95, talking about Windows/286 and Windows/386 and 3.0 and 3.1. I have always done upgrades only and when there is a new system, all I would do is set the Storage Controller back to standard and then clone the HDD and then installed new devices and remove those that were not needed. Ofcourse if this was a laptop/notebook then I would just use whatever it shipped with as the base and then add the same apps as I do as the desktop.

So I read somewhere in here that Windows is now updating versions during a clean install of Windows?

So for example; If I am installing with the ISO for -
Windows 11 Pro 24H2 Build: 26100.1742
I could end up with -
Windows 11 Pro 24H2 Build: 26100.2033

If this is true, it would be great if Rufus could disable updates during install

Yes I can confirm that's what happens. I did a clean install on my Dell laptop recently. You need to run Windows Update anyway as that updates all the drivers too.

I am not 100% certain that I understand what you are saying but let me take a stab at it. Are you asking if it is possible to update the setup components on your Windows installation media? If that is what you are asking then the answer is yes. Microsoft provides not only updates for the main OS but they provide what they call safe OS updates. These are updates for the recovery environment and they also include setup updates. Of course there is even more such as .NET updates and servicing stack updates but the point is that the setup components can be updated.

If I am misunderstanding, my apologies. But if you need any additional information please let me know. I can even provide a sample batch file that shows how this is done.
