My thought’s; If you can see a watermark it means you’re PC is running. That’s a good start.

So it looks like it's the real deal. Might also help explain why some of the older Platforms will not run later versions of Win 11.

I’ll have to admit that I don’t get Microsofts direction in regards to alienating users.
It isn’t cost effective unless they believe that their ads (recommendations) will work. And making it hard to NOT use OneDrive is going to make up for lost revenue. Then again, they aren’t making money on established Windows users who already have their paid copy of Windows. Once you get your license, that’s the end of any income stream from you to Microsoft. (Unless you subscribe to OneDrive or O365 of course, I don’t)

I also suppose that any new laptop you buy would already be geared up to run anything Microsoft throws at Windows, so there is revenue in the Volume Licensing of new laptops. And the trap of O365 and OneDrive for unsuspecting purchasers who just think that these things are mandatory.

Regardless, the alienating doesn’t make sense.

From a marketing standpoint it makes a ton of sense and a pile of dollars. Microsoft cares a great deal about the environment — their financial environment.

Sure, it’s a business, I wouldn’t expect anything less.

Initially, yes. Evidently the rationale is that the stragglers will come round soon enough and then the masses will be on board once again. Given the consumer trend that's pretty close to the mark. Come to think of it that's how I eventually succumbed to Win 10. I think I had at least two years of it now. The last OS Microsoft ever released that actually impressed me was Windows 7 Ultimate. It's been down hill ever since.

Oh the W7 worshippers.

It was crap at handling drivers, not uefi compliant - no secure boot, crap print manager, no "power" menu, no hyper-v to mention a few deficiencies.

You can't get furher downhill than W7. MS had to pretty much rewrite the core to produce W8 which then developed into technically far superior W10/11.

But hey I guess some people love dinosaurs.

WIN 7 was most certainly UEFI compliant and secure boot certainly worked with Win 7 Ultimate on my PC. These other features that came later only piled on additional issues. Menus could be easily modified with Shell for those who had a thing for menus. As for WIN 8 it sure didn't last long (because it absolutely sucked) but that's what happens when you throw all the tools out of the trunk just to have a lighter vehicle. Merely a tablet OS. Now Win 8.1 should have been called Win 9 because it was more different than Win 8 than Win 7 was compared to Vista. Win 8.1 had promise. . . Alas, Microsoft had to put an end to that too. The only OS that ran more stable than Win 7 was Win XP and its gone down hill ever since. Just because something is newer doesn't mean it's better.

I do not believe this at all.

Mostly pure rose coloured glasses.

XP was unstable and crashed frequently. Also the appsit ran were a lot less sophisticated and it would never cope with ardours of modern apps.

I have not had a single BSOD on W11 since it was installed.

So yeah the overwhelming evidence is newer is definitely better in terms of techical stability.

I have always found each upgrade to be better than the last even the much maligned W8 although I admit MS shot themselves in the foot by removing start menu. However it was far more stable than W7.

Comparing OSs is like comparing cars. Modern cars are much more reliable but people still ooh and ahh after older cars like the Dub Club (VW Beetle enthusiasts) but I have no idea why as it was slow, uncomfortable, not space efficient etc. I had one for about 3 months but soon traded it in to get rid of it.

W7 was the same - once I could kick it into touch, I did.

Hey, friend,

I had a whole string of beetles, and liked them so much that when I went to West Africa to work for a couple of years (1965-67), I had one of my beetles shipped to Sierra Leone, and drove it all over West Africa (including to Timbuktu) during that period. Sold that one in SL for more than I'd paid for it originally.

There's no accounting for tastes.

Windows 8 barely lasted a year, it was so full of holes. Win 8.1 was a vast improvement to 8 and should have been called Windows 9 but if they did that it would be like admitting that they messed up royally. Win 8.1 wasn't merely a "version" of 8. There was some serious restructuring involved there and for a time it really did have its merits. Of course Microsoft had to put an end to that sort of thing because it gave the end user too much autonomy. I'm old and set in my ways so yeah, moving on and getting with the times isn't exactly my thing, but it behooves me to ask:

Just what is so great about Windows 11?

Mandatory TPM requirements? < We had TPM before as an option. Now it's just being foisted on us whether we want it or not and I don't have to stress the matter of how insecure TPM can be because in the past decade it has already proven itself unreliable time and time again. How many times do we have to do this??
Powershell, CMD? < We already had this.
Menus?? < C'mon. Seriously?
Driver updates? <Nothing new there.

VM ware? < That's been around at least since Windows Mistake Edition.

No, sorry. I'm not impressed. That was one of the first things I said about Windows 11 when I joined this forum and precious little has changed since. Oh, wait... We get to run our menu from the middle of the task bar! Wow. Well then. That explains it. Windows 11 reigns supreme! :lmao:

Seriously. I got it. I'm an old fuddy duddy. I had my best fun with Windows 7 too and I'm biased. The car analogy is accurate. I won't even buy a vehicle with GPS. I got it — I'm a dinosaur. Those old vehicles are a whole lot easier to McGiver when you're in a pinch. If it still uses points you can get it started with a paper clip. Try that with computerized ignition. Yup. To each their own. Call me a Luddite but IMO vehicles are being over-teched and there could be reasons for this that run toward that roll of aluminum foil (which can also be very handy in a time of need).

Half the people reading this probably don't even know what means to McGiver a thing. I get it. My preferences are obsolete. I'm not even looking forward to advances in A.I. and I'm certainly not looking forward to advances in A.G.I. so why in the world would Windows 11 impress me? I'm not about to eat my words so I may as well roll with the punches or get back onboard with Linux and stay there. But comrades... please... Give me a little credit for at least trying to roll with the punches. That doesn't mean I'm not going to make a little noise along the way while I keep taking hits as I continue to roll down this hill. A certain member here, well into his 80's, has offered people like me an alternative: Go Rogue. I think I'll take him up on his offer.

The more I use Windows 11 the less impressed I become. That's me. I'm not asking anyone to agree with me. I'm from another time. *peace*
